Default Ignition Switch Question?

My ignition switch on the '70 GP tilt column doesn't return all the way to the "off" position. Is it a switch problem or something in the column??? I vaguely remember this being a problem for many GM cars back in the day, but I can't remember the solution.

The switch underneath the column is adjustable.
Possibly it is off some that won't let it move to the off position.
Service manual shows how to do it. Not hard usually.
Firebirds are easy anyway.

Usually it's back-drive linkage out of adjustment.

Grab the collar, below the wheel against the dash, and see if you can twist it and make the park lock mechanism line up and the key turn all the way back.

Back-drive works park/neutal safety/back-up light switch and also keeps you from cutting the switch off far enough to lock the wheel while the car is in gear. Switch should only turn back to lock and accessory with the shifter in park.

Worst cases I've seen was where someone used a floor jack and picked the car up from the side. Then just normal wear and tear in the linkage causing it to not have as much travel. Have seen the adjusting bolt, under the car, just come loose and slip for no reason.

Well, now I did it!

The adjustment did work! BUT, I had to change the switch anyway so I took the wheel off and changed it. Now the horn goes off for no apparent reason! What did I do wrong???

The stick in and twist plastic piece, that has the wire from the horn button and goes through the steering wheel, are bad to crack or locking tabs break off and let the wire ground out and blow the horn.

That or something got bent on the turn signal switch where the brass tab rubs against the canceling cam.

Or possibly loose wire on the button its self.

Exactly what adjustment did you have to make to get lock to work?

I had to raise the connection from the trans to the rod coming off the column. Only had to move about half an inch.
