Default 8 lug wheels ... 65 Bonneville... running crazy

Hi friends .
Just running crazy...
have a set of 6 65 wheels and a set of 4. 67/68 wheels ..
No set is running really nice ..after mounting a few times all on the car ( one 8 lug brake drum is mounted , just start swapping from standard to 8 lug)
Have you ever seen a round turning used 8 lug wheel?
Now the 67/68 is looking to be the best choice..
Okay it’s tabed inside and not like the 60-66 ..
what do you think to use ?
Happy that I have a very good set of drums ..
just start to sand the first 67/68 pair for shiny black paint they will receive soon if I finally take them..
Greetings from Pontiac 8 lug adventure

As I have said before, the 67-68 8 lug rim was the best 8 lug rim made.

The 8 lug wheels I've put on two separate cars all ran very straight, it just depends on how well they were treated by previous owners.

There are places in the US that can straighten steel wheels; I would assume there should be some in your country as well, but they may be hard to find - since most cars these days have alloy wheels, there aren't many places that still work on steel ones.

Hi Stuart,
Yes that’s right ..I phoned already with a company that straightened steel wheels, too ..they asking 150$ each wheel ..
I just double checked the wheels ..
on both sets 3 running good - okay ..one runs at tire area a little up and down ..if you looking from front .. I could use these at rear ..

Roger said the 67-68 was the best and that Kelsey Hayes made that wheel more flexible to help that drums.. What I don't understand is if that's true, why are todays after market wheels so ridged. They say you should have the have the drum cut with the wheel torqued down onto it.. You also need to marry that wheel to that drum buy marking it and always keeping them together (Catholic marriage?? haha)…

Frankly, I think the stock KH set up with the 225/70R14 tire is an excellent wheel and drum system..

I once saw a 67 Bonneville that was all black with black 8 lug wheels and drums, no beauty rings.. All you saw was the chrome lugs and center cap. It was one of the coolest cars I ever saw in my life!

Default 8 lugs 65 66 67 68

Hi 389,

That’s right .. shiny nice black 8 lugs with an dark car looks brilliant... here’s a picture of my. 65 I’m absolutely proud of it !!

Just working at the 8 lug conversion of my 65 starlight black Bonneville’s convertible... I have now 3 sets 65/66 8 lug wheels and 1 set 67 style 8 lug wheels.
The 67 set turns absolutely round ..only one wheel is a little dancing..

At the 65/66 8 lug wheels mist of them are not running perfect round .. can’t understand why 67/68 is more stronger with less material (inner ring) 65/66 is a little more heavy in weight .. better steel in 67/68 that they re stronger ?
However .. I took now the best 5 65 wheels and restoration them now ..sanding..painting and all the way ..happy that the drums are still great with no rust or blue heat spots
Nice option in the 60’s .. expensive game 😅

I'm more of a fan of the silver painted wheels used on the earlier cars, but I am biased (see my avatar.)

Who is roger? drums cut with the wheel on it? never heard that in 30 years of 8 lugs. need to marry a wheel and drum? then how do you rotate the tires. Drums were balanced at the factory also tire& wheel so you could rotate the tires . In the 60's they had spin balancing on the car and a special adapter plate just to balance wheel and tire off the car because the drum was already balanced. Sound like there are a few problems with your set-up.

However, he wrote an article on the care and feeding of 8 lug wheels for the Smoke Signals magazine back in the 1990s that is still a very good reference. Fred Teufert is kind enough to have a reprint of the article on his Pontiac page: http://www.teufert.net/pontiac/8lug/8lug.htm (there are five pages, at the bottom of each screen click on the 'next page' button.)

I believe he passed away not long afterwards. If you asked if his relining drums were balanced he would avoid the question. original drums have a wedge weight by the fins held on by countersunk screws for perfect balance. unless you have a shop check them then it's a guessing game.
