Default 70 Black Large Diameter shift knob

Trying to get a definitive measurement on the 70 only black four speed shift knob for my 70 Formula.

I contacted Ames, and they indicated the large diameter (which they list as larger than original) as 2 inch, and the standard non 70 as 1.5 inch.
An old post here shows a caliper reading of over 2 inch, but I can't quite make out the measurement..

Thanks in advance..

the one I've got is about 2.125" (2-1/8"). Pretty sure it's an Ames repro.

The old 1960s Pontiac, 1st Gen Firebird & OHC Sprint6 Lemans+GTO (Hurst shifter cars) both 3 and 4 speed floor shift manual transmission knobs were all a standard size: 1 & 7/8" in diameter.

Depending on what year print; parts book you are looking at either late in 1969 or right at the start of the 1970 model year Pontiac decided to be different & they increased their shift knobs to 2.10" in diameter.

I've often heard these early 1970s knobs referred to as the tennis ball knob.

FWIW, the Hurst Dual Gate used the little one, an inch and five eighths.

When did the 70's switch knobs? Mine was built 3rd week of March, and its missing its original knob.

Hard to tell from that picture, but it looks like 2.180, not 2.080

it's henerally accepted that all but the earliest 1970 Firebirds recieved one of these knobs;
the exception are the few cars which recieved a simulated leather wrapped knob with a red insert.

I am NOT sharing this to too my own horn, there are several other threads here about it should you care to dig deeper - look for item "E3":

Right, but was there any other way to respond to your “help”? How’s this thanks for your help, but I’m pretty well versed in the reading of precision measuring instruments. I hope that is less offensive to you. By the way your ball seems to be atleast 1/8 of an inch larger than all the others posted. Is there a chance yours is incorrect?
