Default 1969 A/C pump on all the time...

Factory A/C '69 GTO...

As soon as you slide the top lever in the control to the right, the A/C pump comes on. It's ON in EVERY position , including heat, EXCEPT off. No combination of positions turns it off except 'off'

That's not right is it? Pump should only run in A/C and def position no?

And assuming its NOT right...what do you think is going on?

Thanks for the anticipated help, Jim

Wouldn't surprise me that it's supposed to run all the time. Check your service manual. Might even be in the owner's manual.

The OEMs would sometimes run the compressor to chill and de-humidify the air, then re-heat for comfort.

Whenever you move the top selector lever from a position to ANY position it automatically engages the little lever in the middle to the left and that's what controls AC compressor engagement. If you want it off move that little lever in middle at left to "VENT" that will disconnect current to AC compressor clutch. Strange, but that's the way they did it.

Yep, this is the design and the way it was intended to work.
