Default Refitting the 71.

Since the 71 garnered no interest in sales, I decided to keep it and throw a bunch of time and money at it. For those who are not familiar, it is a late June 71 Pontiac build Lemans Sport convertible, factory 400/400 car.

I was always messing with it, currently it is:

#26 Lucy Blue with blue interior and black top
428 with 85cc KRE heads and 2801 cam, Crosswind intake, Cliff Q-Jet
AutoGear M22Z rockcrusher with Peter Serio Hurst shifter
2.93 TruTrac in a 8.5" out of a 71 Cutlass
4 wheels disc, Savitske SC2 front stuff, Konis, 71 442 springs

It will get new Lucy blue paint, the frame stripped and checked for cracks, rewelded and painted. Edelbrock Port FI with in tank pump, reworked rear sway bar, Delphi steering box and Sport wheel along with the dash pad refurbished.

I am torn on the wheels - they are vintage Centerline AutoDrags - strong but very light. Thinking about 17" Bandits but hear they are quite heavy.

Noted several discrepancies, ie one side had phillips srews holding the rear courtesy harness, the other hex - missing captured nut for the folding top.

This rubber shim on the body mount was interesting - wonder if the body or the frame is out of spec?



I am sure we will find more interesting thing as I go along!

That reminds me of my 72 I'm finishing. I wish I would have had a nice lift like that though. I had to weld/bolt a bunch of supports so I wouldn't bend mine.

Wow! Nice rig - or will be even better when you're finished. Looking at your first picture, I can't help but imagine a set of 17" rally II wheels. With the EFI, it'll be a trouble-free elegant cruiser with the muscle to back it up. Hope you post more pics as things progress. Good luck!

No intent on hijacking your thread....Just wanted to give you another idea on wheel/tire selection.

Wheel Vintiques 15x8 on all four corners.
BFG Radials--Front 245/60R15....Back 255/60R15
Purchased as a bundle from Summit Racing

Are you happy with the cam, or does it feel small?

It no doubt is a bit small for some here - but is the equivalent of the 068 unit.

The WV's look nice, but If i were to change I would run bigger diameter-wise, hence the Bandit 17's.




No way in hell would I ever run BFG's again; other far superior tires made for less $ than those bricks.

Yup, BFG are an inferior tire.

Painter texted me noting that the shop will not be ready for my car till around the new year. mnnh.

I guess this is better than being locked up for a year. His shop is small so he has to turn cars before accepting new work.

I am not sure if I am going to keep the rocker trim - it always looked tacked on to me, Thinking of welding up the mount holes and keeping it body color:



sorry for the MS Paint 'shop.

I would love to find a 72 GTO style extractor to work into the lower fender to replace the dummy louvers...

I went through this on my 70 GTO and ended up keeping it. It looks good either way.
