Default First time at the drags.

I had tuned my car best I could on the street but never ran anybody.
Decided to go about 15 miles to local 1/8 mile strip.
My wife ,2 children, and myself went one Friday test and tune night last year.
We backed next to the fence , unloaded the cooler and chairs out of the trunk and I opened the hood to col down before first run.
Next to me parked a couple late mustangs, 2005-2007,a young man and his girlfriend.
Both gt, one 5- speed and one auto. Mostly stock except for flow masters.
The guy in the stick ran 9.40, the girl in the auto ran 9.50.
They seemed real friendly at first , grinned and waved.
After I ran a 9.06 , they wouldnt even look my way...
Even with hood up, my car looks like a pos...
Before the night was over a guy in his late 30s came buy several times and looked
Under the hood, he finally said to me that's no amc engine. I ask what it was and he
Said Pontiac. I asked how he knew. He said he has a gto.
I told him the truth and we talked about half an hour.
He asked more than once for me to price the engine, I never did, think I am going
To keep it.
Ps- during the build of the car wife couldn't understand why I was putting the wrong
Brand of engine in a car. Now she thinks it's cool.
Pss-where do ipost questions about turbo 400 speed gear choice,I did
not c a tranny section?

Default speedometer gear

Cool story! If you'll post your rear end ratio and rear tire size I'll let you know what speedometer gear will work for you.

Awesome story!!!
The 4 door part really makes it a bigger laugh.
Ya never should'a told 'em that you knew what that engine was under the hood.

Next time you go racing (LOL) wear a pair of overalls, w/ a white t-shirt, get a pouch of Red-man for the back pocket. Every time one of the "Racers" asks a question, tell'em "Crap, I don't know, I had this moder in uh old car, and my rambler woodn't run any more, I got it runn'n with this moder"

That would be classic Smokey Yunick. He used to do it to piss off Bill France.

My phone, no camera, old school I know. When someone comes by and will do it for me I will.
Ps I would like for someone to make me a picture of a stagecoach with a rebel in uniform sitting on it being pulled by a Indian setting atop of a team of horses, may put it on a t shirt.

Hey, there are a lot of us "good ole country boys" who race and wear overalls. I haven't worn anything else for years, except for special occasions. But hey, I got it honest. My Dad and both grandpa's wore 'em too.

I also beat some Chevy dirt cars with a very beat-up Olds body, with Pontiac power.

TJ rigged up a couple of gag plates for my bracket cars, with a country theme.

LOL, very few people know what a Pontiac engine looks like, even fewer know what an AMC engine looks like. Engine install looks awesome. Very few folks are going to have a clue about your power plant being unoriginal, way cool!!!
Reminds me of the cop cars on ADAM-12 TV show...

I spent more time on the engine install than I should have, trying to make it look oem.
I have benn driving it over a year and still haven't cleaned it(on purpose) letting it get a little dirty. Battery is fake, real in trunk in cardboard box, speedway alum cross flow rad under stock support, tall chrome valve covers painted amc blue.i even used the stock amc wiring. Did u notice the vac wipers, and I only have one on the drivers side.
Only interior mod ,tack in dash where stock raido was ,and fire ext underdash. That is the stock Bonnie air cleaner turned to cold air on the pas side.

Great sleeper. Even with the alum radiator I'm surprised you don't have cooling issues with the fan that far back and no shroud.

I'm supprised also, my other cars with 400+ CID ,had overheating issues to work out, had to put a shroud on them.
This radiator came from speedway and was advertised to cool a 500hp engine.
Ps it does get really hot for about 15-20 min after I shut it off in summer.
I cut holes in the hood and put mini scoops on to let some heat out.
