Default 389 transplant into '62 Chevy dually

I have a '62 Chevy 1 ton flatbed dually with a 283\4 spd and 5.14 rear end. It runs ok but has a slight knock and feels underpowered on all the hills we have around here. I've got a 389\th400 and am kicking around the idea of dropping it in the Chevy. How will the 389 perform with that gear ratio and a gross weight of say 4 tons?

A Ford Top Loader Manual Trans with a 65 Pontiac GM/Ford Bell Housing Pattern would be very strong and would let you control the engine rpm better vs the T400.

I'm with you, Tom. I'd rather have a 4 speed but the th400 seemed easier to install. Who has the bell housing...

Assuming the 4 speed is original to the truck, 1st gear is not synchronized and is so low that it is mostly used for pulling stumps. I hardly ever use 1st gear in my '52 GMC (same SM420 transmission), even though it only has 90 HP.

The rear tires are probably a lot taller than you are used to, so the 5.14 ratio is not as extreme as you might think. The center section of your rear axle will interchange with Chevy/GMC 3/4 and 1 ton trucks from the late 40s into the 70s, some of which have ratios in the high 3s.

I'd use the TH400 unless you really plan to use the truck as a truck a lot. I think your "4 ton gross" number is a bit high. 3 tons is more realistic.

The 389, with its higher torque at lower RPM would make for a much better truck engine than the 283. V8 GMC trucks from 55 through 59 were equipped with Pontiac V8s.

Bill, 4 ton gross would be with 2 tons of gravel\fill dirt. Heavier than typical but still something it would be used for. Definitely has the stump puller 1st gear, just about a face-paced walk. Trying to figure out the most cost effective tranny for an old Pontiac powered farm truck used on a weekly basis.

Here is a link to the bellhousing with the dual pattern GM 4-Speed and Ford 3-Speed Trans. http://www.4speedconversions.com/581.html

I also attached a picture for you showing the Trans mount face.

Bellhousing will bolt right up to any 389/400/421/428/455 engine.
