Yeah I agree. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a chevy motor. I have a pontiac motor in my bird, and i love it. But before the bird i had a 70 chevy pickup with a 350 in it. That thing ran like a dream, and still does. I was a hardcore chevy man till I got my bird. Nothing wrong with a chevy.

Steve just remember like some of the others have said Pontiacs do not reach the rpm's of a chevy. They make torque tune for it. If the engine doesn't perform the way you want it come back here we'll help. That torque when harnessed is one ride none of the other makes have stock. I think its not the engine that is disliked I think it is the persons who have razed us that run those makes, and we associate the make. I don't care for'mopars'. Because I was rubbed that Pontiacs don't run.

im not against chevy motors. what i am against is whatatever GM said didnt apply to chevy. just think what would happen if gm didnt can the sd. someone on here has a homepage that explains what gm did in the 60's to pontiac. seems like chevy got away with what they wanted to and if they couldnt top pontiac then gm canned it.

just because im 21 that dont mean i have to like imports

Keep it Poncho powered you will never regret it!I have built all brands of motors, each different and special in their own ways! When built correctly they all last as long as you live within the boundaries of their capabilities. My 302 Chevy motor has to be heard to be believed, not many "stock"motors can be shifted at such high rpm's !Yet my 400 in my goat just pulls HARD right off idle, has 110,000 plus miles and oil comes out like brand new!Build it right, change the oil every 3000 miles and you've got a winner!

Great dialogue here...I need some direction here...I am redoing a 66 GTO conv. and have had numerous little engine problems which are a royal pain in the butt...Is there a place to buy a new pontiac crate motor from oil pan to carb...ready to bolt in...most people I have seen on the net are rebuilding used motors...

Jrkd,
www.krepower.com These guys will sell you a motor ready to go carb to pan and are relatively close to you. The reason why you see the builders rebuilding used motors is that the last 400 pontiac v8 was produced in 1978 and was last available in 1979. If you want a "new" block you will have to go the I/A route. These blocks can cost from $3200 on up. That is if you can find one.

If you put a Chevy motor in a Pontiac you will DEVALUE the car by many more dollars than you can save on an engine even if they gave you the engine. The Chevy guys wont like you and the Pontiac guys will look down on you like you married your sister.

The original question was "does a Pontiac cost twice as much to build, and not last as long as a Chevrolet?". My experience would suggest the Pontiac will cost more, probably as much as 50 percent, probably not twice. The machine work should be a wash, but the parts for the Chevrolet will be cheaper (economy of scale). However as to longevity, the Pontiac will probably outlast 3 to 4 Chevrolet engines on the street. I have no race experience with either, so will not comment on race conditions.

Others have mentioned devaluation. Putting a Chevrolet engine in a 68 'Bird will cut the value of the Bird by the amount necessary to replace the Chevrolet with a Pontiac, and will decrease the universe of interested buyers by 75 or more percent. Of course, if you never plan on selling the vehicle, this point is moot.

Whatever you decide, enjoy the Bird.

Jon.

Pontiac motors can rev if you build them right. I have buzzed my 389 to 8,300 and it will go higher. My vintage iron Pontiac (1959) can walk on ANY vintage chebby from the same era and I'll put money on it!!!!!!! Pontiacs rule. Come race me, watch the back end of my car!!!!!I dare you! Put up or shut up! Steve Barcak www.pontiacheaven.org

Steve Barcak, I like your attitude! Brings to mind a story about an old freind. He was a mechanic at a wrecking yard in the mid 60s when I met him. He drove a 62 Chevy that he had bought new and the engine took a dump. They had gotten in a low mile 58 Pontiac so he swapped the engine and tranny. Some years later, after he had opened his own shop, I went to see him about doing some work for me. I noticed that there was a brand new Impala in front of his shop and said "I see your still driving Chevys" He told me to go look under the hood. What I saw was the same 58 370 that he had put in the 62. He told me that this was the third Chevy that he had put it in. He said that he rebuilt it before he put it in the 68. How's that? Buy a brand new Chevy, take it home, pull the engine, and put an older Pontiac in it!

Bill

Steve, It's already in the works. My retirement home, a diesel toter and a car trailer with living quarters. It may take a little time as I'm only 60, but I'm already working on it. I'll probably even buy a place out there to call home. (mostly to keep my junk) My brother lives in Wickenburg, so I have family close to you and he has been to your event and has tried talking me into getting down there.
