Didn't a few 68s have side marker lights? Another rare option is the 2-barrel option...Paul

Two barrel carbs. pretty rare on GTO's, but probably pretty common on all Pontiac "A" bodys. Didn't both V8 & 6 cyl have a two barrel? I thought all 68's had side marker lights?

Hey, no prob!

For example, let's say we have an option:

UB5- Hood-mounted Tachometer 2.7%

Applying that percentage to Lemanses would be incorrect. For one thing, who's to say which Lemanses were ordered with this tach? Would it be cars with hi-po engines? I bet they would carry more weight, but we don't know that, so we must assume every Lemans made would be as likely to have the option as any other.

In order to use the stats correctly, they must be applied to ALL Tempests, Customs, Lemanses, and GTOs. Anything else is incorrect. That's all I was trying to say. It's easy for people to misuse information.

The info I am distributing came from an inter-organization letter originating within Pontiac Car Distribution. Subject: Factory Installed Options and Accessories. Date: August 13, 1970. Unfortunately, 1969 options that were not available in 1970 (like retractable headlight covers) were not included in this listing. 1969 option build rates were included in this 1970 review for comparison purposes.

The five highest installs for PMD A-bodies in '69 on this listing were:
D55- Console (3727-37-67-4200) 84.5%
N40 - Power Steering 88.9%
U63- P/B AM radio 89.7%
White Side Wall Tires 79.3%
P01- Deluxe Wheel Disc 62.6%

By 1968-9, most of the delete options were restricted to export-only units. U.S. Federal safety regs made heaters, seat belts and other safety related items manditory by Jan 1, 1968. Radios were an optional selection in these years, so if you didn't order a radio, you got a blockoff plate.

The console, only available with bucket seats, and bucket seats only available in certain model "A" body Pontiac's, would seem to be a much lower percentage of the total than the other top four options. Power steering, AM radio, WSW tires & Deluxe Wheel discs, I'm assuming were available on all Pontiac "A" body cars.

1. My '68 GTO has colored keyed rally II's. According to Zazarine they were an option in 68 and also according to Zazarine there were 16 exterior colors for the GTO in 68. Of those 12 colors, 5 were available on the color keyed Rally IIs.

2. See the Zazarine GTO Restoration Guide for this information.

1. Go to page 37 of the Paul Zazarine and Chuck Roberts "Pontiac GTO Restoration Guide 1964 - 1972" Second Edition, 1995.

2. You will find that Pontiac offered five different colors for the Ralley II Wheel in 1968. I was incorrect about the number of body exterior colors. I said that there were 12 when in fact there were 16 exterior colors for the '68 GTO.

The console option listing I shared applies only to the LeMans and GTO series in the 2-door models.

I only have option installation figures for '69-'72 model years.

Hey,

1968 GTO convertible front seat shoulder harnesses. I see installation instructions for these in the Fisher Body manual but have bever seen them on a '68 factory installed, but I've never seen a lot of things! I see you can order sets made up, would like to try them but there is a retainer for them, I'am not sure if you can that get easily.

OK! So no Tempest, or station wagons, or four doors. That changes the mix quite a bit.

Exactly, that's why there is the additional information (3727-37-67-4200) listed in the console line.

What are the seat-belt retainers? (they sound like what I have)..

And how do see if you have front or rear shoulder belts? I've got shoulder belts in mine, but I've got no clue if they're for the front or rear.

I've never seen my cars build sheet (can't find it) and I have no PHS on it. So I dunno what its got.

The first link will show you what seat belt retainers look like and front seat convertible shoulder belts are shown in the second link. If you have rear seat shoulder belts they mounted in the trunk while the front seat shoulder belts attatched just behind the back seat armrest well under the base of the convertible top mechanism.

Regarding the build sheet in your car many were put under the gas tank, under the back seat or under one of the front seats. Mine was long gone and many are. Contact PHS to get the PHS documentation for your car and that is as good as a build sheet. It tells you more than a build sheet anyway, like what dealer the car was shipped to and the date. As Pontiac enthusiasts we are very fortunate to have such a documentation service like PHS so it's worth the money and it will show you everything your car had when built. Here is the link-

I was referring to a retainer that I think goes on the seat itself to hold the shoulder strap? May be totally mistaken though, seems I saw an article, picture, or illustration about them somewhere. There was also a clear plastic sleeve that went over the belt where it went between the rear side trim pieces from the mounting point.

Allan,

There are two plastic retainers that come with the shoulder belts, they mount below the courtesy lamps and they hold each shoulder belt when not in use. They are almost identical to the ones I have pictured in the link above. The plastic sleeves you mentioned also are on the shoulder belts and slide over the part of the belt that slips between the upper armrest cover to the mounting point by the top mechanism to protect the belt from fraying.

Thanks for the info Mark, I checked my manual and they do show those in an illustration of a full size in there. Noticed there is a difference between the standard seat belt buckle retainer and deluxe, learn something new everyday. I think I'm going to put them in mine now, heard Ssnake Oyl makes them up without the retainers and sleeve.

Thanks Again,
Allan
