I didn’t want to post this until I had it in my possession, but I am just too excited to keep it under my hat any longer. I came across a great deal on a Pontiac engine. I am buying it complete from carb to flex plate. The only thing I need to do is to change the cam as the one in it is way too small. The cam is a 260-degree solid roller in a 482” engine. I am only getting it now because it was a deal. The only experience it has seen is 4 partial runs and one full pass. I won’t be able to consider putting it in until the end of this race season, unless I put myself out of the running in the PDD series. I plan on picking it up on April 10th.

OldmanGoat - There is no question that the engine is capable of putting my car in the 9's. The question is whether I want to go through the hassle of chassis cert and renewing my license. To begin with I will probably tune it down to run ten-oh's. My first additional task will be finding the right combination (without too many $$$) to change my gear ratio to something in the mid 3's. My 4.56's are already too low for my 400.

omt- what converter, trans and tire are you running? i can't imagine why you'd want a 3.xx gear in a race car unless you have tire height limitations.
if this is a badass engine (which it sounds like it might be), then twist the pi** out of it and hang on for the ride. |

I am limited to a 29" tall tire. I am already going across the line at 7000 RPM with my 400 at about 123 mph. I expect to pick up 15-20 mph. Since I need to kill power anyway, I would like to gear it to go across the line at around 6200.

Current trans is a T-400, 4200 stall converter, 29x11 slicks.

I know it is very presumptuous, but here is my logic. The engine was in a 2400-pound roadster. It only made one full pass, so obviously things weren’t optimized. Also the engine was never on a dyno. On that one run it ran 8.53 at 153 with a 1.25 sixty-foot time. I will be installing a larger cam, and I will probably have it dyno’d so I know the details. That will be a while, but I will post the results when it is done.

Jim,
Great news, faster is always better. I'll give you $500 for that surplus slow 400 that you are taking out. ![]() Les

Jim, I don't think that engine will fit in your car. I know of a little orange heap that it might slide into.
![]() Congrats on the new power plant. Hope to see you this summer.
