i know the it can take standard 455 pistons...thinking of using the 455 crank in a 400..have lots of forged .30 over 455 pistons...

That would require the 400 block to be bored .060. Yes it can be done, but it would be advisable to have the block sonic tested before boring. some bocks can go more, but I've seen a few that it would be risky to bore that much.

You will not have a problem as long as it's a pre 75 block. After that then you might need to check for wall thickness. But for 99% of street applications, not an issue. Application determines a lot of things. Going from .030 to .060 is only .015 around on each side difference.

Racing, rpms, high compression, then that's a different story. Built tons of 400 .060 and never had a wall issue for street applications.

When I put a 455 crank in my 400 block there was one spot that had to be ground. It was in the front. If I remember correct it was on the RH side with the block upside down.

Jeff is right.....the front counter balance wont clear...minor grinding required.

Using the 400 crank...What about piston pin height from change in stroke, won't the block now need to be decked too or the piston will be down in the hole...right?

To make up the piston pin difference, I used, if I remember correctly, 6.855" rods in my 400. I wouldn't think you'd be able to deck a block that much to make up the differnce, but I don't know for sure.

All block are the same height. All Pontiac rods are the same length.
Just use the proper piston for the stroke your using. Pin height.
Use roughly 10.220/10.230 as a deck height.

455 crank: (4.210) cut to 400 size. 3"
Dude main bearing conversion kit.
Pontiac rods: (6.625)
455 pistons: (1.497/1.480)

You can then Deck block for deck height ya want too.

FYI -- I have a nice set of std. forged 455 pistons set up for floating pins if you need some.
