Has anyone run the Richmond or Doug Nash 5 speed manual transmissions? How do they hold up on the strip? I want to replace my Muncie. Choices are TH 400 or 5 speed manual. Any imput would be interesting.

I'd go auto, T-400 for consistency at the track. It's also easier to get off the line with the right converter set up. Although the manual trans is more fun on the street. Had the pleasure of driving a BBC 6-71 Camaro this week end with a Jeffco 4 speed (just like a Lenco, planetary with clutchless shifts) that was fun but at $4500.00 it's not a typical option for most of us. Pull'in levers!

Dave, A friend ran a nash 5 Speed in a 69 TA with a 6-71 blower and NOS on the street for 4 or 5 years. The only problem was a smoked clutch ( way too much power for a stock type clutch). I agree with BR, for racing the 400 would be the way to go, but for fun, the 5-Speed rocks...

Application?
There is also a post elsewhere regarding clutches. Some cars are meant to be automatics. Others, like the old crap I'm into, look silly without a stick. It's up to YOUR taste and YOUR budget. ------------------ "My yellow in this case is NOT so mellow."--Hendrix |

I don't plan on bracket racing. Just want a fast ET. Would a Nash 5 speed be faster than a T 400? I have a 455/3:73
Just want a hot street car. Would a Nash handle slicks at the track?

A local guy here in Houston used to break his Street 5 speed on a regular basis behind a 455. Talk to their tech dept. The lower the first gear ratio the lower the torque rating. They ususally come with a 3.08 first gear. Dropping to a 2.80 would probably get you some strength there.
Racing you have to go with the consistency of an auto. But a 5 speed is sure fun to drive. I have a Richmond drag 5 speed going in a Camaro project car. Those straight cut gears are pretty stout looking.

One more comment if 1/4 mile mph is what you are interested in a manual doesn't have the hp loss of an auto so they usually have a higher mph with the same et.

Dave, Richmond recommends no higher the 3.08 gears. I run 3.55 with a 26" tire and I can say first gear is real low. If you went with the 5 speed, you may want to consider a tall tire or changing your gears. Just food for thought.
PS I love the trans, had it for many years and it never gave me any trouble but I've stayed with street tires. I got a aluminum flywheel, 11" Centerforce clutch and a hydraulic clutch. ------------------ http://hometown.aol.com/nylewis/ta.html

I have set-up several T/A's with the old Nash (now Richmond) 5 speeds. All were street versions & had standard 3.27 1st gear ratio, then one hell of a gear drop to 2.13 second gear. Behind mid 400 horse 455's & 428's, we didn't need that kind of gear multiplication even with 2.93 8.5 gears. Real similiar situation to my Cummins pickup, so much torque down low, you have to start out in second. With the street version & 2.13 second, you're basically starting out in 2nd with less gear multiplication than close ratio Muncie.... Just didn't work in our applications. Would like to see a race version with say 2.78 1st & equally spaced gears from there till 1-1 fifth.

I had one in my car and I had tons of problems. It jumped out of thrid gear whenever I got on it hard. The 5 speed Nash was never ment to handle ove 500ft lbs torque. I also picked up around 5mph and around 2tenths when I shifted from first to third, for some reason the car liked the wide spread from first to third. I had 3.08 rear gears and the 3.26 first gear.
