What is the best way to clean up surface rust and carbon build up? I've had a head off my 455 for several months and the exposed surfaces of my cylinders has darkened. What would be my best steps to getting them cleaned?
All help is appreciated.

Well I work on helicopters and deal alot with corrosion and I would suggest using a dye grinder hooked up to an air compressor and attaching scotch brite type abbrasive disks. I have found this works real well and then using oxygen displacing cleaner to clean the sanded surface or methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) or even alcohol works well. hope this helps.

I too have exposue to sophisticated cleaning processes..

I use a Stanley No 1992 blade chuck into the left hand, while piston is orbited in the right hand.

Same blade is used to clear head surface of stubborn gasket material.

Blade then does a peel-pass along the upper cylinder to cut-out the carbon ridge.

Blade then is run along each Valvestem lenght and left hand articulates to follow the stem backside. Blade is used as a Planer-cuutter on the valve face...for best results. Important: Maintain shallow attack angle to avoid cutting into the relatively softer vavle stem head.

Wire-wheel (medium) each piston and each valve to finish quality.

Alcohol clean-up on head surface, to promote copper COLOR metallic car paint adhesion. (half the cost of copper gasket spray, and likely better effect)

The best cleaner I have found is the Eastwood orbital green disk. Part number 31128

Works like a champ, even on aluminum heads.

The 3M roloc stuff just rocks!!. I've used it on pumps & valves that have gotta be 30 to 50 years old.
Don't forget the safety stuff when you really get after it using these products 'cause they bite hard!!
