I think the 301 has a Metric 200 trans. What problems will I run into swapping in the 455/TH400. Will the TH400 fit in the tunnel? Is there room in the engine bay for all accessories like a/c? Thanks-Jim

If you swap in a 455 and turbo 350 it's a direct bolt in.. Sell the 400 trans, build a t350 and bolt it all in. AC is no problem as long as you use the stubby ac compressor. May have to work with the brackets to bolt it to the 455 as it has a taller deck height then the 301..

How is the fit with a TH400, anyone know? I am aware the trans crossmember will need to be moved/fabbed back, I am interested in the tunnel. Thanks-Jim

the tunnel's a tight fit but it'll work.

the crossmember will have to be moved back.

455 w/ a th400 no problem. I bought me an aftermarket G-Body crossmember that will stiffin your car up big time. Other then that the only problems you will have is headers. I had to have my passenger side custom bended. Good luck.....Mike

Indian Adventures make a set of Pontiac headers for the 78 G-bodies. Mine fit very well with my 455 and 350 trans.

brackets: use all the brackets and pulleys from the 301 on the 455. it will fit. i used my 301 pulleys and brackets on my 350. there is one ear on the alt/ps bracket that needs to be cut off, i'll take pics of that. The A/C brackets that goes to the intake won't work, but the aluminum piece that goes on the front of the pass. side head should fit, as should the bracket that goes on the side of that. the 200m and th350 have the same case length, so it'll bolt right in. the 400 is longer, so you need to move the crossmember back. i can't remember if the holes are already in the car for the move or not. I was told headers for 70-mid 70 firebirds will fit, if you modify one tube on the drivers side. The indian adventures headers are nice, but last time i looked they were close to $600 for raw steel headers. kinda pricey for anything but a race car imo. If you have a console shifted car and use the factory shifter and cable, i hope you don't have as many problems getting that to work with the new tranny. Also you'll probably want to change your front springs to compensate for the addition weight of the 455. hope some of that helps.
