Hi All. Trying to figure out what's what with the rear axle on my recently aquired '70 GTO. Going to pull the cover off to count teeth but till then would appreciate any help: According to the PHS documentation it should be a 3.23 posi, but I couldn't find the code where I figure it should be on the aft side left axle housing. -- I did see # 9795084 on the lower right corner of the diff. housing. It's a 10-bolt with "scalloped" sided rear cover. -- Can the ratio, year, type etc be decoded or is this just a casting #? The way the car drives it just CAN'T be the original axle. -- Thanks.

The code will be stamped into the axle tube not cast. Not sure where for yours as different years and types had them in different places on the axle tube.Try looking at the front of both axle tubes about 4" from the cast center. It should have a 2 letter code and a numeric date code. The letter code will tell you the ratio and if it was a locking differential or not.If the tubes are badly pitted you may not be able to find it.

The stamped code should be on the rear driver side tube about 3" from the carrier.

If it's original 3.23 with posi, the code would be XF.

Thanks John and Tom. A more intense search in the daylight and I found the code ( as best as I can read it ) on the drivers side axle tube, rear side. It reads: "1 0 XH" -- Don't know if the "0" is a zero or letter "o". Can you translate? Thanks.

The 'XH' is a 3.55 gear with 4 pinion posi.

Usually the other numbers are after the XH,showing the month, year, manufacturer, and if posi or not.
