Default "I have two 421 blocks"- yeh, sure ya do !

I recently checked out a find, where a guy had (3) old Pontiac Catalinas. On the phone he stated that he had a spare 421 and that one of the cars had a 421 in it.

Just got back from checking it out now- all 3 cars are YC code 389's with 2-barrel carb. And the spare motor is a 389-2bbl as well.

oh well ! I knew it was too good to be true...

I quit buying parts out of the local paper in the early 1980's. All Ponitac cylinder heads magically became RA IV heads around that time, no matter what they were. It got too hard to sort out the BS from the truth.

There are still buys to be had. They just do not come so easy anymore. My 72 formula I bought last month comes to mind. My all time best line that I still see in the paper. "Big-Block Pontiac 350"

I was at a Wal-mart in the auto dept one day when I saw a 68 Firebird in the bay. I walked in and a kid came up and told me it was his car. It had a crappy looking 350 with an Edlebrock carb. He and his buddy said how fast it was and that it ran in the 12's. Bone stock chasis and tires. I just laughed and walked off.

I actually have a serious question..(that I'm sad to say I don't know the answer to) What's the difference between short blocks and long blocks... Is it just the stroke??

Short block is just the block, crank, pistons, and maybe cam, and timing chain fully assembled. No heads, intake or accessories.

A long block is the short block plus the heads and valve train (rocker arms, pushrods etc.) fully assembled.
