Default Restoring Rally II Wheels

Hi,
I purchased 4 Rally II wheels that are 15x7" code HW. They are late 70s wheels. Bolt pattern is 5 by 4.75". So they will fit my 1968 GTO.
I plan to clean them up, repaint them and buy the trim rings and center caps.
My question is which center caps?
Will the black plastic caps correct for 68 fit on these wheels? I measured the center of the wheel and it is a little over 2.75"in diameter.
Which trim rings are best. Some are 3" deep, others are 2.5" deep.
I'm looking for close not concurs perfect.
Thanks,
Mike

If you are putting them on a 68 GTO, you would be putting the center caps that have the chrome outer portion with the lucite center cap. For 1968 models with Rally 2, I believe you have the black lucite center cap with the red "PMD" lettering. If you want to have correct caps for the year of the wheels, you need the silver cap with the red pontiac logo engraved in it. Hope this helps.

Hi 72LemansFreak,
Will the 68 style caps with black plastic insert fit on the HW wheels?
I remember that somewhere I saw that the later Rally II wheels had a larger center diameter. If so, I may have to use the chrome metal covers.
Do you have an old and new Rally II wheel that you could measure for me?
Mike

That's a good question. Let me check tonight. I think I have a pair of HW rallys and I'll check the diameter of the center. The wheels on my `72 are repros, so I don't know what to compare them with. I'll be in touch!

Hey, didn't forget about you, but the weekend got a little complicated. Everything is ok, though. I'll get you the numbers soon. Sit tight and once again, sorry about the delay!

Hi,
Not a problem. I measured the outside diameter of the center of my wheel and it is 2.875". It has the three cut outs evenly spaced in the inside hole. I am assuming that the 1968 center covers will fit.
I dropped off the wheels to have them sand blasted this morning.
Thanks,
Mike

Well, finally measured it and the verdict...

The reporduction (Wheel Vintiques) and late 70s HK rally wheel have the same diameter at the center. I came up with 2 7/8" inches.

So...I don't know how much help that is. There is no code on the repro wheels that I could see.

If you know where you want to buy the center caps from (Performance years, for example), just ask for the dimensions of the cap! It will be a little less than the measurements we have here. That's normal for these wheels.

Good luck and let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

Thanks.
I got my wheels back from being bead blasted. They are really clean. I plan to paint the insides to protect them from rust and corrosion. Will order a paint and mask kit to do the curbsides. Can't afford the $85 per wheel to have them powder coated.
Thanks for checking this out for me.
Regards,
Mike

Mike, when I did mine I found the mask kit was unnecessary. Instaed, buy some of that green masking tape as it doesn't leave adhesive when you remove it, use a sharp knife to cut the edges, (there is a groove for the knife to stay in) and spray away. One final thought, use a Satin Finish clear coat when you are finished spraying the color coats, I used gloss, and its too shiny.

Hi,
I ordered the trim rings, lug nuts, centers and mask kit yesterday. May not make it to Alabama by Friday, but I will be able to paint the inner sides. I'll get the semi-gloss clear coat to finish them up on the curbside. Thanks for the tip.

Hi,
Today I used a pre-wipe on the inside of the wheels to clean off the dust and debris left on them from the beadblasting. I spray painted the insides with a rust inhibiting gray paint. I also painted the the outsides between the rims. The paint, mask kit, centers and trim rings should arrive tomorrow. I will start painting them on Monday or Tuesday.
Should I coat the insides with the clear satin finish paint?
So far so good.
Mike

Default Fit of Wheel Centers on Rally II Wheels

Hi,
Got my center caps and did a test fit on my 15x7" wheels.
What is the purpose of the three slots in the center hole of the 15x7" wheel?
They don't line up with anything on the center caps I bought.
Is the center cap only centered by the single screw and the backing plate which goes in the inside of the wheel?
See picture below.
Thanks,
Mike

Default Picture of Original Rally II Wheels

Here's a picture of a set of original Rally II wheels and tires from a 71 GTO. These wheels are in original paint, hopefully it will help you with the proper color shade of charcoal gray.

6T5 Cat,

That's the charcoal color that I seemed to recall back in the early seventies. Do you have any idea where that correct charcoal gray paint be found today. I'd like to know if there's anything out there now that's even close to that color. Everthing looks like the color on the later Rally Wheels.

Thanks, Jim.
