Default Bucket seat conversion problem

I have a 67 Tempest/GTO clone that I put bucket seats in. I used the bench seat mounts for the outside bolts and use the bucket seat bracket kit for the insides. Problem is, my seatbelt retractors will not fit between the door and the seat anymore. Is this common? Should I just take everything loose and scoot it over so that everything will clear okay?

assuming you welded the brackets in the correct position...

did you bolt the seats thru the 'outside' hole in the rear (vs inside)? this will give you almost an inch laterally on the side.

also look at whether you have the retractors installed correctly. there is a R and L.

hope this helps...

There is two bolt holes in the back on the outside of the seat and the floor of the car. So I used two bolts. I was thinking about scooting the hole seat toward the middle of the car about an inch and only catching one bolt. Of course I'll have to move the inside brackets in an inch as well. I think I may need another bracket. I noticed the parts place sells a bracket kit that has 4 brackets in it. It says it makes it just like GM. This picture shows the bracket I am talking about. It is the front outside individual perch. Do I need that?

Thanks brp88transam, I went back and checked out my floor again with the seat seting in place and it appears that my floor has a raised area where that front outside bolt is, so I guess I don't need that perch after all. Oh well, I guess it's just another case of whatever works, go with it.

Default seat belt retractor positioning

I switched my '67 Tempest wagon over to buckets some years back and I had the same problem with no-room-for-the-belt-retractors as you did..it drove me nuts as I'd apparently done everything correctly. I ended up having to redrill/weld the whole thing..never did figure out why it didn't line up, just one of the fun Area 51s of the resto conversion hobby I guess. (I've seen a few studies that warn of lap belts-only being more treacherous than no belts at all..to do with spinal injuries from the lap retraints Vs. being tossed around inside the vehicle..I even considered installing the later anchored-through-the-headliner 3 way belts but they were such a rat's nest of webbing and buckles I just gave up and glued a nice, shiny St. Christopher's medal to the dash instead. So far so good. Jim.
