Quadra-jet
Hello, Has anybody ever used the rebuilt carbs from o'riely auto parts? They are rebuilt by Tomco I believe. What year(s) carb is the 800cfm?
I was told the 78 was an 800. Right now I have a 77 off a 350 pontiac firebird, is this a 750 or 800cfm? Thanks, Brad |

Most of the parts-store Q-jet carbs arent worth the money. They have generic calibrations, mismatched airhorns/main bodies/throttle bodies, and the workmanship is generally average to poor. You'd be much better off rebuilding the Q-jet you have. It is likely the 800 CFM, but won't flow that unless rebuilt and calibrated properly. Cliff is the guy to ask for specifics, but the rebuild kits are available from O'Reillies, and tuning parts are available from Summit racing.

Hello, The 77 that I have was purchased from o'rielly. It's still in the box. Paid 315.00 inc/$50 core. I'll be taken that back first thing in the morning. Any ideas where to buy a good 800 cfm carb? Thanks, Brad

All 1975-later Pontiac Q-jets with three last digits of the application number, 262-278 are of the 800cfm casting. 1976-80 are the best units.
None of them will flow full 800 cfm until the airvalve stop are modified for approximately 1.38" opening, measured from rear edge of opened airvalve to rear wall of choke housing. |

We see dozens of commercially "remanufactured" carburetors. We don't want any more of them in the shop. They are WAY too labor intensive, AND the biggest source of our "comebacks". We average about one comeback in 300 units, and it's almost ALWAYS some POS "remanufactured" carburetor I spent WAY TOO MUCH time trying to resurect.
You are much better to start off with a slam worn out "virgin" unit, and install good parts and rebuilding procedures/settings/etc, than waste any time of funds on anything commercially remanufactured.......Cliff PS:....and don't be fooled by the "Holley" reman's, they are by far the WORST of the lot, no doubt subbed out WAY South of the border!
