Default How to Balance Honeycomb Wheels

I have a nice set of honeycomb wheels which I redid last year according to the recipe in Goats Garage. I used all OER paints, primer, flex, adhesion promoter and the final coat. The original finish was in great shape so I only sanded with 400 and went at it. Now, one year later I went to get the tires mounted. When they put it on the balancing machine and tightened it down, the paint cracked and came off where the balancing machine contacted the honeycomb part of the wheel. Any ideas what I did wrong? I really do not feel like redoing all the wheels so I just brought them home. It is impossible to find anyone who bubble balances-not that that was any good. Any suggestions?

And were trim rings correct for 1972 Honeycombs-I have them but not sure I want to use them. Many thanks

You'll need to find someone that has the older style mag wheel adapter for a spin balancer. Basically it has 5 studs & you have to bolt the wheel to it much like when bolting it to your car. Most shops hated these as it took 4 times longer to mount a wheel on the balancer. The other bad part w/Honeycombs & trim rings is that there will ALWAYS be a wheel weight where one of the trim ring clips will go!

Frank,

I had the same thing happen to a freshly refinished set of honeycombs myself. It can be very frustrating. Since then, I've always had them balanced on a bubble balancer. It may be an outdated process, but I haven't had a problem with the balancing yet.

In regards to the trim rings, they were not available until '73 for 15" honeycombs, but you'll find plenty of '71 and '72 cars with them. I hope this helps.

Jim

Thanks very much for the replies. I'll look for someone who can bubble balance or who might have the adapter. ...I guess it's things like this that make the hobby so much fun.

Any shop worth their salt can "static balance" a wheel and put the weights on the inside of the rim.

Sure, the hard part is finding a shop that still has a static balancer.
