Default Zinc oil problem addressed in Hot Rod june 06

Anyone catch the article on page 124 of the June 06 issue of Hot Rod magazine? They address the problem with the absense of zinc in todays motor oil. Interesting!!

Well, they didn't mention Amsoil. But what they did mention is that racing oils including racing synthetics, which aren't street legal due to the high zinc content and absense of the detergent additive package are usually ok. If you've got the racing stuff you're more than likely ok, Amsoil is a good oil. But I'd check. Look for zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP) antiwear additive as a ingredient.

Rocky Rotella's article in HPP on the change of automotive oil has been out for about a month, and is the first detailed analysis of this important change. It is much more extensive with more and better references on the subject. Rocky contacted several oil companies as well as the American Petroleum Institute. And he provides specific information on identifying the different types of oil on the shelves. Check it out in the June issue of High Performance Pontiac, or on the HPP site at:

Delvac too. Been running Rotella or Delvac for quite a few years now - it's cheap and you can buy it at the gas station in 1gal jugs. Anything in a 1qt bottle turned to water under the heat of a Root with iron heads - race formula or not. I always figured the diesel oils were made to run under similar stress given the high boost applications they're used in.

I believe you can get the old formulation back by adding the engine oil supplement, (EOS), for older engines -- can be bought at parts counter at G.M. dealerships.

EOS costs ? Shell Rotella is less than Valvoline. Cliff stated a couple months back he has been using it for quite awhile with no issues. Next change that's what i will be using. I had been adding stp which also is ZDDP.

I just picked up a couple bottles of EOS from a local GM parts counter. It was about $8.75 / bottle ...

I've heard that Diesel oil will also be reduced in ZDDP and Phosphorus content next year due to the introduction of catalytic converters. I'm stocking up on the good stuff now.

Chief - Here's a couple shots of the bottle for you and the others. They don't recommend using it as an oil additive, but I believe this is due to the potential damage to catalytic converters if used over a period of time. This info is from Rocky Rotella's article in HPP ...

Thanks Sport, that really clears up the questions, I was told by an ex Pontiac engineer that due to the lack of zinc and maybe some other properties in the new oils that proper break in on re-builds are just about impossible. Thanks again.~

Are you talking about the stp oil treatment in the blue bottle?
