Default CAM INSTALLATION

A FRIEND OF MINE IS PUTTING AN 068 CAM INTO HIS 67 GTO. THE MOTOR IS A 75 400 BLOCK WITH 670 HEADS. HE ASKED WHERE THE CAM/CRANK GEAR TIMING MARKS SHOULD BE. MY 67 SERVICE MANUEL AND CHILTON BOOK HAVE THE TIMING MARKS AT 6 & 12. HE TOOK HIS TIMING COVER OFF AND SAID THE MARKS WERE AT 12 & 12. WHICH WOULD BE CORRECT

THANKS

turbo 400,

with the #1 cylinder at "tdc", your timing marks should be at 12 & 12. This will put #1 spark plug ready to fire. At 6 & 12 #6 cylinder would be ready to fire. It can be set up that way but you have to time everything to the #6 cylinder, otherwise you will be 180 deg. off, not good. I always set mine to 12 & 12, with #1 at "tdc", no problems.

Mark

Ya, can be done both ways. I'd do it however it was done before in order to preserve the plug wire routing and such.

6 & 12 or 12 & 12, both ways will put the cam in the correct timing phase. Turn the engine over one rotation with the timing chain installed and 6 & 12 becomes 12 & 12 pretty easily.

As mentioned, 12 & 12 will put the cam in the right place to install the distributor with the rotor pointing at #1 firing position.
