Minitubbing my 67 firebird
Has anyone done this to their bird?
Could you keep your back seat? Was it a pain in the ass? Anyone have any pictures? I'm minitubbing it so I can run a 325/50/15 drag radial or I'll run a 28x13.50 et street. Also my friend that owns a chassis shop is building me a sheetmetal 9" rearend for the car....... so I figure we'll minitub it at the same time and do it all at once. |

Here is a site that has some great pics and parts for minitubbing first gens. I did not use their parts in my minitubbing. I used the origninal tubs and moved them in and then welded in a small strip of metal. Looks good and is functional.

Mr Pushrod,
I used to live in Reno too and raced at Fallon when it first opened. Used to street race down on Edison back in the day. I moved out of Reno in 1999. Still miss the cars during Hot August Nights. My Firebird looked pretty much the same back then except I did not have the cowl hood. I was running 13.32s at 106 in Fallon. Robert

very famous road in reno to street race on.......They're talking about shutting Fallon down for good now. Since you're an old street racer I'm sure you know the same people I do, Cuda scott, Manny with the elcamino, etc..... I know those 2 are old school street racers in this town. |

Did Cuda Scott have the 440 or the 340. I raced a Cuda once that had a 340 six pack that was worked over. He was a little miffed that my hunk of junk as he put it could beat him. He swore up and down I had nitrous, but I didnt. I just had a converter that was too small for my cam and when the cam and converter started to work together the car really took off.
One of my buddies was a Reno P.D. and he told me that during Hot August Nights he noticed some lights out behind the mall and decided to check it out as he thought it might be street racers, but he was not prepared for what he saw. Two guys that were in town with a couple of old slingshot dragsters had pulled them off the trailer and was getting ready to run. He said that he wished he was a couple of seconds later so he could of seen go as he wanted to watch the race LOL, but being that he caught them he had to break it up. Robert

I seen before some company made the inner half of the well that was wider and mated up to the quarter side nicely. This gave a nice factory look. Also you can get a 29 inch tire to fit if you center the rearend.

My car is mini tubbed there is enough space for a 315 tire BUT the tire hits the leaf spring.
It has offset shackles on the rear of the spring, it is just over an inch offset- I look at the detroit speed offset shackles and they are more like 1 3/4". Just an FYI. |

I have seen that car before, but never got to see it run. The Cuda I ran was like a 70 or so. I have heard that car ran 10s, but was not sure.

Mr. Pushrod, I'm having that done to my 68 convertible Bird now. I'm keeping the back seat. I have a set of custom made ralley ll 15x10 on the back. I bought them from a guy who cut up (4) 15x7 to make (2) 15x10's. I'll shoot up tomorrow and take a few pics. He has the area cut out. It looks like it was a pain in the tail. The fabricator peeled back the factory edge and is going to spot weld it back in place to look factory.
I have 275/50/15 MT et radials on the car but I will be able to put 315's on easy. I saw a 68 camaro this guy did before he did mine and it looked real nice. The vert makes it a little tough for he has to notch and rebox the frame. I had to get a new gas tank also. I just sumped a new tank and it doesn't look like I will be able to use it. I also went to coil overs and sway bars and a ford 9 inch,35 spline axles 4.11 gears. I have a problem too much car and not enough motor now. I plan to run for a few months and get a Dude motor.Dave |

I priced a stainless fuel tank, narrowed 3" per side, sumped with a trap door. Supply and return lines and filler hose (oem location), sender hole.
Get ready- 850 bucks. Rockvalley Auto. Dave- do you know how much your spring are getting moved in? John |

Lots of minitub info on Pro-Touring's website. Some specific info on the rear seat at this link:
http://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22723 Personally, I don't care for how thin they cut the rear frame rails for the minitubs. Here's a good shot of how narrow the rear frame rails get. Of course, you could swap to a four link rear suspension and not worry about the rear frame rails. http://www.detroitspeed.com/productp...uadra_prod.htm

why not go to a ladder bar setup so you don't have to worry about the tires hitting the stock suspension?

Ponjohn, I'll check tomorrow on the springs.
Brian, I meant ladder bars not sway bars. Brian the guy that is doing the work on my car does the frames for the Scraton's. They are having a few Mustangs done for the 10.5 class. Mel Eaves is having his new Camaro done there also. I saw Mel's 63 Vette in the back yard of the shop. Or what is left of it. He hit the wall at Bradenton at 200+ mph. He said he only had a small burn on his finger, not even a bruise. His hans device got hung up on the cage, he said put a skip plate in the top of your hoop so the hans won't get hung up in the bars. That's what slowed him on getting out of the car. I now Mel for about 30 years, not well tho. He worked at insurance agent next to my deli when I first moved to Florida in '76. He has done quite well. He only writes policies for drag cars. He's a pretty interesting guy to talk to. Dave |
