what's the best intake for 2nd gen fb's
what is the best intake to run on a 2nd gen firebird, with for a mildly worked engine and still be able to clear the hood. is anyone able to run the rpm somehow(i.e. using a shorted air filter and lower dropbase cleaner).
Sean

On my 77 TA,I run a Performer RPM with a 1/2 inch phenolic spacer under the carb. I had to custom build the air cleaner base, but it works great and looks awesome. A vendor on this site..WFO...also makes a drop base housing that will allow you to run a RPM on a 2nd gen 'Bird.

The RPM will not fit , unless you use a Cowl or Shaker hood.
I run a Tomahawk single plane, the fit is perfect.

Formula Hood
With the Formula hood your options are a stock cast iron intake, the Performer or the Tomahawk... even then you'll need a dropped base air cleaner and a 3" or shorter filter element. Best to install and then double check with a piece of clay or playdough... ask me how I know...

are the tomahawks any good for an engine that's not really gonna be above 5500-6000rpm. i think it my be overkill for my setup.

A 'mildly worked' engine needs nothing more than a factory iron intake if you're running a Q-jet carb, or a Performer intake if you want the option of using a square-bore carb (Holley, etc.)
Both of these intakes will run better than anything else on a mild build, with the factory intake being the better one of the two. After seeing plenty of 11 and 12-second cars running the stock intake, it's a slam-dunk on any milder engine. Bonus: no Formula hood clearance problems.

thanks for the help guys, that's all i needed to know.
it would be nice if we had readily available aluminum intakes modelled from the stock cast iron pieces. if nothing more then to save some weight. almost makes me want to take my intake to school and cast one for myself.lol

The Edelbrock Performer is a nearly identical copy of the pre-1974 original cast iron factory manifold and is made of aluminum (both in EGR and non-EGR versions). There are also a few vendors now selling reproduction aluminum Ram Air manifolds. You can run a taller manifold, but you would need Larry's WFO air cleaner base to retain the proper height. I also agree with b-man, a factory version manifold is extremely hard to beat.

Don't forget the original Tomahawk, the Holley Street Dominator.

use the performer; it works well, saves weight and fits.
mine has the deepest drop base i could fine, a 2.75" k&n element, and a particular top that also cleared. i have no stud protruding above the a/c lid but perhaps 1/16". still has scratched up the hood's bottom a bit, but it won't get through it. early second gens suck suck suck for hood clearance.

Interesting topic.
I have a friend who just bought a '77 Formula/4speed and asked if I come take a look at as the engine was running bad. When he opened the hood, there was a RPM intake sitting on this engine! I've tried to help folks in the past with clearance problems on the 2nd gen Formula's and all have had to run a Performer or stock intake. This particular car had NO clearance issues and retained the original air cleaner! I have no idea why this car has clearance to accomodate the RPM, while early 'birds don't. Everything on the engine is original.

How do I know?

Dropped base, 3" K&N element... only 1/8 taller than the paper element it replaced... now I have a scar in the fiberglass under the center of my formula hood. The 3-pointed fancy air cleaner nut cleared the center of the hood but not the passenger side edge when the engine torqued and moved it around a little... DOUBLE CHECK WITH CLAY! "And now you know the rest of the story..." V/R, Ty

The Torker II isn't alot taller than the factory intake or the Tomahawk. My 81 TA with the flat hood on one side and the turbo bulge can fit a HO or Performer with a 1/2" spacer Holley or Q jet and a dropped aircleaner. But is close. I had to double check with clay. Don't know how that RPM fit.
If you have a 400 I wouldn't think of a single plane. There are repro HO/RAIV intakes if you want a stock aluminum look. Last edited by Skip Fix; 11-02-2006 at 12:29 PM. |
