Thumbs down Seat upholstory choices

In case anyone is having trouble deciding what brand of seat covers to use, take a look at the pictures below. The ones on the ends are a PUI that i purchased and installed 2 years and 11 months ago. The center two are a Legendary seat cover that i just installed today. In the background, the rear seat is also a new Legendary cover. Man, it really sucks having to pay for something twice! One more to go!

Quite a difference! If you don't mind, what was the cost of the ledgendary part? I'm getting ready to do this on my 67.

I got my Legendary set from our sponsor here back in February for $330, but i know that the prices at Legendary had just gone up to $400 for the set, so i don't know if they went up here too yet or not.

PUI had the GTO market for many years. With the difference in quality and PUIs unwillingness to improve their product, I believe Legendary will soon become the leader.

Quality usually costs a little more but the difference in this case is noticeable and worth it.

I would hope that the retailers would recognize this, and discontinue the inferior product.
The weak pleating on the skins of my 66 interior bucket seats makes me mad every time I look at them. If the Legendary Gold skins are close enough in color I am going to change them out.

Cardo,
We have all heard about "a picture is worth a thousand words", but this surely proves it!
Thanks for sharing this info. Very much. Now I have NO doubt where I will be spending my money!

I have a 65 GTO conv with the FAWN interior. Legendary was the only one that has the correct gold. SO IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO REPLACE A FAWN COLOR FOR 65, LEGENDARY HAS IT! NOONE Else had it.

They also have a very close FAWN rug. Good Luck!

Legendary Auto Interiors all the way. I purchased black skins for my '66 from them...they were perfect.

Anyone know if this only applies to the '66 covers? The '67s have a completely different pleat pattern. Maybe the PUI '67s are better and that's why there are mixed opinions on the PUI quality?

Lee - I doubt it. When you feel the covers, you can tell that the Legendary ones are thicker, you can see the stitching is heavier, and there is more re-enforcement in the back at the top corner seams. What irks me the most about this whole deal is that this is the second rear seat cover i bought from them. The first one did the same thing and they wouldn't warranty it because it was over 2 years old (2 1/2 years at the time). But they did sell me a new one at cost. At that time they told me they would make me up a set that wouldn't do this. So this is 2 rear seats plus a set of front seats i've paid for. I don't believe Legendary was making them yet when i bought my last set from PUI. I honestly don't believe PUI is capable of making a better seat cover at this time, but i work near their faciltiy and i'm tempted to go throw this set of covers on their door step on my way to work tonight!

The entire PUI line of products that I've seen is inferior to the 64 - 67 products that Legendary makes. It's not just one year or color.

Legendary vinyl looks like the original, feels like the original, the colors are a better match to the original and the pleats in the seats are crisper and more defined.

PUI is either unwilling or unable to make the quality product that the GTO restoration industry has been demanding. PUI has received the feedback, even before Legendary came on the scene, and evidently they feel that there continues to be a market for their cheaper, inferior interiors.

what about door panels. I'm about to bust out on a complete interior in black for my 65. I've seen several interiors where the pleating is randomly coming apart in patches. When you have poor quality and its random and unpredictable like that QC becomes very dificult to regain controle of. I've also noticed that the 40 plus year old origional interior materials still at 40 plus years old feel better quality wise than new krap. I was going to spring for leather but I'll try legendary. Lets cross our fingers.

I really don't think you'll need to cross your fingers if you go with Legendary..... it will probably hold up like the originals from what i've seen so far.

Thanks for the post Cardo. I redid my covers about a year ago and went with the "cheaper ones" not knowing there are other better choices. Now I know. Next time I will go with the Legendary seat covers....what a difference.

I wish I would have seen this before I bought my PUI covers at Spring Carlisle earlier in the year. I was told that the quality was similar & that is why nobody had the Legendary in stock, at Carlisle. I got a great deal, but if the product sucks, then it was not as great as I thought.

I would have bought the Legendary if someone had them on hand. I saved about $200-250 on a complete interior (and some other misc items), by buying at Carlisle.

And this is nothing new with PUI more of a SOP.
Just ask me how they reacted when 5 sets of Firebird covers were sent to them in an effort to "correct" all the short comings of 67-9 Birds.
