Question Valve Cover Breather

I wanted to know where I could get a pair of tall breathers like the ones in the photo?

I want to install a pair of old finned aluminum valve covers in hopes of quieting the Rhoads lifters tick a little.

Hey Jeff, not sure where you'd buy the tall stacks but i'm looking breathers myself as i just bought a set of the Cal Custom covers. Not even sure i'll put these on car until i see how they look after i clean them up. Curious as to why you're going with the tall ones?

Pitt64 - Hope someone chimes in with some good info. I'd like a pair myself so the breathers wouldn't suck so much oil when racing. I've looked around a little for them but nothing yet. I'm going to try Speedway Racing [I think they are in Nebraska] as they have some roundy-round stuff. I believe Jim Hand uses them a bit. I'll post if something pops up.

No luck at Speedwaymotors.com. They had Chevy valve covers with the stacks already welded in place but that was about it.

63HO, sand the covers with some 1000/1500 grit wet/dry and then run them on a buffing wheel with some polishing compound (all available at Home Depot or Lowes) and they will sparkle like new money.

63, I'm hoping the tall stacks don't leak.
I like my present breather set up but they are push-in. They go to the air cleaner. I might try to make a reducer and convert the twist-in to push-in and use my present breather system. Allthough the tall stacks do look cool.

Looks like circle track stuff to me too Jim.

I'm interested in this, too. I have a set of M/Ts with about 1 3/16 holes. I wonder if there are push-in/screw-in breathers for these. The stock oil filler cap is too small.

I don't relish the thought of sanding them with anything that's some kind of black wrinkle/textured paint between all those ribs...i'll likely just use stipper and make it disappear.

My left breather leaks a little too, but alot less since cleaning the screen. Mine are twist on style, too bad because i think these would be nice on the Cal custom cover. Maybe a bit pricey at $40+ shipping but i like that they have the correct style AC logo and dimples. Saw them on ebay but maybe our host or ames might have them just haven't checked yet.

They would probably look great on top those stacks Jeff. Maybe a bit pricey at $40+ shipping but i like that they have the correct style AC logo and dimples like my originals.

63, I'm going ot look into having stacks installed into my aluminum covers.

Tom, I want to quiet down the Rhoads noise with the heavy aluminum covers.

I'd be willing to bet those breather towers are off some sort of factory HD truck chassis.

Something like a gas engine hot-shot truck or cab & chassis or such.

They use that sorta deal as it can be hard to get to the engines to dump oil in them with some of those trucks.

My guess is a good parts guy at a HD truck dealership would be able to locate such a part, the question would then be if it is still available or not.

The newer ones would likely be some sort of high temp plastic or such though.

I just made a set for my son's engine. I used the rubber baffle grommet & then a set of push in breathers. One in each valve cover. It turned out very good & it stopped pushing oil out the dip stick tube. The tubes I made raised the breathers up 1 3/4 inch but you can make them any length you want

The extensions in the Speedway cat don't have the thick hold down clip.

The notched caps don't have enough meat for the thick aluminum covers. That Speedway cat does have a lot of cool things though.
I was thinking of a pair of these and using regular push-ins and grinding away the bayonet stubs on the valve covers.

this is what I came up with. He now has about 300 miles on it & not a bit of trouble out of it. The rubber grommets have a foum rubber insert in them & I took it out because I didn't want oil to soak them up & cut off their breathing I also made a plate that is welded inside to stop the oil from getting to the breathers kind of like what the old M/T had in them
