i need to take out about 12 degrees of timing from my original points distributor with a pertronix unit. if i set the initial timing at 16 degrees it has about 50 or so when revved up to 3000 rpm. when i set it revved up at 35 degrees it ends up at 4 degrees at idle and runs like poo... my plan is to weld the advance limiter so i can adjust how much the weights fly out. is this gonna work?

when you get 50 degrees of timing is that with the vacuum advance disconnected ?

When I was still running a points unit in my 71 GTO I ran about 41 degrees total at about 2800. You can get a Crane adjustable vacuum advance diaphram and limit total advance that way and still set your initial at 14 degrees. Also to eliminate spark scatter associated with a points style distributor you can get a composite gear from B-O-P engineering. This should help in tuning when you change over from the points. I would also recommend a MSD Blaster II coil to help fire it off.

what i want to do is be able to set my timing at around 16 degrees at idle(around 900rpm) and have about 35 whens it's revved up to 3000 rpm but i can't because there is 10 degrees too much advance built into the distributor..... also i have a msd blaster coil, new cap, rotor and taylor 409 wires |

wow that is a lot of advance
when i bought my weight's and spring's kit it came with a bushing that limited the advance to 20 so with my 15 initial that gave me 35 total and i don't use the vacuum advance

Or, most re-curve kits come with a small bushing that slips over the pin and effectively makes the slot clearance smaller. The first one I ever did, it took me 5 or 6 times of welding and filing teh slot to get it where I wanted. After you have done a few, you will be able to eyeball em pretty close the first shot. Good luck, -Abone.
