Default 1971 GT-37 performance

I'm kicking around the idea again of getting the GT-37 close to me. What's the performance potential of a 71 400/4spd combo? It'd be built to "stock" specs to be able to run in the Pure Stock Muscle Car drags.

Probably low 13's as that is what one member here runs with T-37/400/4 speed. The 400 was the only engine in '71 that you could get with performance gears. All the rest were stuck w/3.55's or higher.

It's a Quazel gold with sandlewood interior 3spd 350 2brl car. I've mentioned it a couple of times on here before. If I get it I'd drop in a 400 with a muncie. Before I do I wanted to know what'd it run. I've seen some times in the mid to low 14's posted. Who has the car that run's 13's. I'd be interested in talking with them.

paging Steve Coulter :-)
Steve runs a lucerne blue 71 GT-37 400 4sp in Pure Stock. He had some trans issues on fri so he dropped out of the 2/3 shootouts on Sat. but he's run mid 14s IIRC.

Judge273 hopes to have his 71 GT-37 455HO 4sp car ready for Stanton this year.

Interesting, No PS, PB or any other options. No guages, no posi, no air, no carpets but optional vinyl interior. Lots of rust to deal with from the humidity of the midwest. Like the colors though. Therte was a '72 w/auto in Kodiak, AK years ago. LeMans GT. Liked the color combo then and still do.

the car in Texas is very similar to the car here. The car local to me doesn't drive and it needs a new decklid and trunk floor.

Would a 71 GT37 with a 455 D port and automatic be more potent than a 400 4spd? Some quick research that gloryrestoparts did awhile back showed that the 455 D port couldn't be had with a manual trans.

Matt,
That is correct. In '71/'72 the D port 455 was an AT only. It was rated at 325 hp and 275 or so net. HO was 335/310. 400 was 300/250.

Jack and others,
How much more potential does the 455 have in an optimized "stock" application? Thanks.

Default GT-37 Performance

ratkillr
I own the 71 GT-37 that Chris (glorerestoparts) refered to in his post. I am running a 400/m21/4:10 12 bolt combination. I have a PYPEs 2.5 inch exhaust system with x pipe. I'm also on BF goodrich t/as. Coming off the line at an idle and shifting at 4800 rpm I ran a best 14.48 at 96.7 mph. My first time participating so a seasoned driver could improve on this I'm sure. As Chris said, I experienced trans problems due to some driver error and had to withdraw from the 07 race. Thought I would be OK to just watch again but now realize that racing is WAY more fun. New trans going in this spring to get set for 08. Any questions let me know.

I think that a 455 in a "stock" application should be good for low 13's easily and with some tuning could get well into the 12's without too much trouble.

I've been running '69 Lemans convertible in FAST and run 13.5's on g70-14's. The motor is a basically stock 455. If the motor were installed in a '71 car I could run it in FS. Stock intake, unported 96 heads, log manifolds, etc. The convertible is a very heavy car, it has A/C too! I would think a fairly basic hard top/ post car should be almost 500 pounds lighter than my 4100 lb. race weight.

Thumbs up

Dad's T-37 with the 400 4speed ran mid 14's last September, but I'm sure with more tuning and seat time that low 14's could be had with a true stock engine.
With the engine built to NHRA specs, I could see mid 13's with the 400 4speed combo, low 13's with the 400/auto.

A couple years back I had a 71 GTO with a "96" headed 400 that was taken close to the NHRA legal limit's. This car ran 13.90's with the 400 4 speed, and it was crippled with having the wrong trans(M21 instead of an M20) and a 3.55 gear, plus it was heavy with the endura nose, buckets, etc.

This engine in Dad's T-37 would easily go mid 13's, very low 13's with an auto.

I would personally build a D-port 455/auto for Pure Stock Drags. Easy 12 second combo that will be nipping at the great HO's heels.

Tom thanks for responding. I've studied yours and Steve's times since I found the car and have been thinking about getting it. Your GTO sounds very similar to the goals I would have for the car. If I get it I'm sure I'll be in touch regarding your build of the GTO and your dad's T-37.
