Default hood tach working again

my aftermarker hood tach worked great when i got it, then started reading really high.
i saw lou on muscle car specify that the coil poles should be on the bottom because the coil contains liquid, and air may be trapped at the top.
i checked mine and it was loose and had turned over. i turned it back. now hood tach is working again. coincidence?
connections are/were very clean.
