Default My 72 T/A restoration and some question as I go

Hi-
I pickup this 72 Trans Am in TN 12/27/07 from the 3rd owner who bought in 1987 and parked in his garage and never tag it. The car was started and drove around the block two or three times a year. The car has one repaint and one engine rebuild. All numbers match but the carburetor and the A/C compressor is missing.

To date my son Kurt and I have disassembled & label the car and motor. Had the body and frame soda blasted. Sent all the chrome out to Paul’s Chrome and the gauges to Auto Instruments. And have restored many small parts

I will no doubt have many questions and from what I have read so far this looks like the place for answer.

Pat

Yes this can be the place to go for answers.Whether you get the right ones or not will be for you to judge.Looks like your son is into it.
Just from a brief look at the pics looks like you got a pretty solid car there.I see after the soda blast the car has had some minor body work done to it,and noticed the front drivers fender is a 73 or later vintage,so it proably had a fender bender at one time.I wish our older t/a's up here in Canada were that solid.

Looks like a great project and a great find!!!

ONE SERIOUS WORD OF WARNING: Soda Blasting---you need to really clean and prep any metal that has been SODA BLASTED prior to painting it. Preferrably you would want to clean the metal with a DA Sander and 80 grit paper. There have been numerous problems crop up for people that painted over an "as blasted" surface that was stripped with SODA.

Do some research and you will see I am not making this up nor is it an urban legend.

Have fun. Nice looking car.

Welcome. Nice T/A and great project. Always love to see these cars get restored correctly.

Nice Charger and garage, too!

Ta Kid, What the car lacks in rust it makes up for in dings & dents. But I’ll take the dents over rust any day! And yes I’m looking for a 70-72 drivers side front fender! Any help?
The driver’s fender I have is perfect but wrong for the car.
Thanks!

P Glade, Yes you have to wash the steel body down a product called Hold Tight it’s a salt remover and rust inhibitor. Help do a 67 GTO 2 years ago and it worked great!
Thanks!

Keith K, I’m having hard time keeping this one all stock. But I will keep it original.
All but the wheels and tires and maybe 1.5” lower.
Thanks

Pat

There are some members on this site that might be able to help locate a fender close to your location. If worse comes to worse and if your good with a cut off tool and mig welder you could cut out the raised support web on the fender and re-weld a new section in to match the original or even find a rusted out original fender that is still good on top and cut it out and use it on your good fender.More then one way to skin a cat

Welcome aboard, Pat.

Lucy Blue '72 T/A is one of my faves - nice! Looks like you're well into the resto process in less than three months.

Ditto what Keith said about the garage and the Charger.

I think I'm in love...

Just can't decide whether it's the cars or the garage. Probably both!

Welcome Pat, I see you are going to Carlisle. Do you live in Pa. I live in Northeast Pa. You have come to the right place for great information and Pontiac friends. If I can be of any assistance let me know. I also have a 72 T/A. Cool garage. Good luck with your car.

This is how I plan on working on the bottom of the car. It’s not a rotisserie but I think it will work!

Welcome to the forum! That's going to be a great project! I'm sure that the memories you build with your son on this project will be every bit as wonderful as the car will be, and they'll last a whole lot longer!

You're making excellent progress, Pat!

I would suggest adding a failsafe chain to your lift. Adds a bit of safety for you and your son.

We will use a tall sailboat jackstand when we are under the car working!
Thanks!

John, I have look at your car pictures on other thread (looks Awesome) and I'm considering using the same size tires you have, 255/50-17 right?
Thanks!
Pat
