Default oil pan clearance

How much of a gap should there be between oil pan and cross member?

I just stabbed the original 400 block into my '68 f-bird. I'm using the same motor mounts as I used on the '74 455 block I just pulled out. I did use a new oil pan from http://www.pro-touringf-body.com/engine.html - It was a stock pan that had trap doors added- Same mounts Same car - Different block and diff oil pan.

The pan is sitting very very close to the cross member. The mounts are good. It's almost like I need an 1/8th" spacer under the mounts. - I'm not yanking the engine back out. Am I missing something?

in my 67 bird with new mounts there is probably 1/4" of clearance, when i took the motor out previously the mounts were worn and it was close enough to rub off the paint but not dent the pan. i never noticed any noise or vibration that i would attribute to the pan hitting the frame

It appears I have the same problem with my 67 bird. New motor with 72 block, oil pan is hitting the frame. New mounts & oil pan were installed, so I'm thinking one of those 2 items is the issue. Thoughts?

My first 455 with brand new mounts actually was rubbing on the frame. That was a Canton pan. We have now put on a factory pan and I have more than 1/4" of clearance now.

Yup, going back to the original stock pan. Looks like it's going to work.

Default clearance

FWIW I run a Canton pan in my bird with good mounts and it is tight. There is a recess in the crossmember that is hard to see when the engine is in the car. The pan kind of sits down in this and I think the other pans are a little wider in this area. Nice beefy pan though, 41/2 years now and no problems. Price to pay for a muscle car ( tight to hood and cross member) big motor in med size car?
