3rd week Sept. is very early. The Dealers were allowed to begin selling the '64 Models on or about Oct. 1, 1963. That is the date Pontiac officially announced the GTO, but they had already been in the pipeline with the rest of the '64 Models.
Pilot production most likely was taking place throughout Aug. Regular production began the day after Labor Day, Sept. 3, 1963 and regular production GTOs were already being produced that week. Pontiac produced a whole string of them identified as "Zone Announcement" cars that were intended for such activities within each Zone as being given to the press for test drives to generate publicity. Only the Convertible & Sports Coupe were available at the start. The Lemans 2 Dr. Hardtop Coupe was not released until a month or 2 later, production of them (including those with the GTO option) beginning shortly after the new Body Style was announced, I believe the earliest Lemans Hardtops were produced mid or late Nov. My Fremont 'vert has a Time Built code of 11D. I have documented a Fremont 11C 'vert, haven't seen one earlier from Fremont. Aside from colors, how else was yours equipped? Was your GTO built at the Pontiac Plant or one of the satellite Plants? |

5 Group code 2P is widely believed to refer to the Radio in '64.
2P is a very common code to find on the Data Plates for the KC and Pontiac cars. And the Radio is a very common option. However, there is some evidence that it did NOT imply the Radio. Does your GTO have the Back-up Lamp option? The Radio and Back-up Lamps were both included with the Basic Group option package, this was also a fairly common option package to order. It is possible that 2P was the code for the Back-up Lamp option. I am trying to uncover evidence to determine this for sure. I have found 2P on the Data Plate of a car that was not apparently factory built with a Radio. I have found a Data Plate without 2P for a car that apparently was factory built with a Radio. But so far every car that has the 2P on the Data Plate has had Back-up Lamps and conversely, the ones missing 2P have not had Back-up Lamps. |

Eric, yes, that is my assumption. Fisher didn't install the Rear Bumper or the Trans, so the "accommodation" for the Back-up Lamp option that Fisher might have been responsible for was likely wiring, if in fact 2P relates to Back-up Lamps and not the Radio.
Around the time I first began to suspect that 2P might not relate to the Radio, I came across something, I think from a Corvair hobbyist, pointing to the 2P as relating to the Back-up Lamps. Seems to be holding up against the evidence so far. |

John V-
I own a 11 B Fremont built convertible 64 GTO, triple black. It is a pretty loaded car with power windows, seat, antenna, a/c, steering and brakes, all lamp groups. I've had this car since 1988. I'll check the 2P, as this car has radio, and b/u lights too. Thought I'd put this in your records. |

I own 2 64s and both have 2P and both have back-up lights.

gtojon, you definitely won't have any 5 Group coding on your Fremont Data Plate, they didn't use that code system.
They coded UPCs instead. The B/U Lamps were UPC T86 but I don't believe Fremont ever coded this option on the Data Plate. I own a Fremont GTO Pinehurst Green Convertible, 11D (date produced 11/20/63). I have documented an 11C GTO Aquamarine Convertible (date produced 11/18/63). My Data Plate has no Accessory codes, the 11C only codes the B70 (Instrument Panel Pad). It also was highly optioned, including A/C, Auto Trans, PB. Like mine, it was equipped with the P30 White Wall Tire Override. Wondering if your GTO got the White Walls also or Red Lines? Yours would be the earliest Fremont GTO I have come across. What is the Date Produced on the PHS? What Body No.? |

The reason I ask is because the John's obituary in the "Tracker" (our chapter newsletter) said that he had the build sheet for the very first GTO...but we can't seem to find a copy of it. K

A copy of a Manifest for one of the Zone Announcement cars was published in The Legend, late in '05 (October issue, IIRC).
I do not believe that it represents the very first '64 GTO produced. The Prod. Date is shown as 9/11/63 for that one. Unless PHS claims otherwise, I do NOT believe this was the very first production Lemans with GTO option assembled at the Pontiac Plant. I believe because it is identified as a Z.A. car, it was considered "significant". IIRC, a copy of an article from the Dallas paper of a test report of one of the Z.A. GTOs was also included in that article. This is the car I alluded to in my first post here. I suspect this Manifest may be the one attributed to Sawruk, although I think Mattison was given credit for supplying the copy from the microfiche records. If there is a record of an earlier GTO, I would welcome the opportunity to see a copy! |
