1964 Lemans Engine Replacement 326vs350
I just purchased a 1964 Pontiac Lemans factory four speed car with a 326 motor. The motor needs to be rebuilt. Looking for opinions on rebuilding motor or thinking about replacing with a new chevrolet 350 crate motor. Is it a big deal to go with the new chevrolet crate motor?
Thanks Will |

replied to your other post. didnt know it had a four speed though in that one......you should rebuild the 326 at least or look around here for a decent used but running 400 for it. there are crate pontiac motors available

If you put a chevy motor in it, you will need to use Chevelle frame mounts and move the battery and fuel line to the other side. Plus, every Pontiac guy who ever sees it will hate you. Rebuild the 326 or buy or build a 400 or 455 for it.

Chevy also uses a different trans if is an automatic or bellhousing if it is a manual due to bellhousing bolt pattern........JB.

Everyone has there own preference. Mine would be to find a 1964 389 or 421 and rebuild that and put it in the car. Keeping it all period correct brings an interesting aspect to a restoration. And if, for some reason down the road, someone wanted to reinstall the 326 (provided you still have it) it would present no problems. Anytime you move outside of the Pontiac family you'll end up doing alterations that may or may not be reversible.
I put a 389 from a 64 goat in a 64 Lemans 30 years ago and then dragged the 326 with me through four different moves to three different cities. I was darn glad I still had it when I needed some tough to find little parts. I keep thinking that someday I may bore it out and beef it up with some different heads, etc., but right now there's too many other projects to take care of.

Chevy 350 Crate Motor in 1964 Lemans
Thanks to everyone for their input. Yes, I certainly agree staying with a Pontiac motor versus the Chevy 350. With that said, would it be better to replace the 326 with a crate Pontiac 350 or 400? Once again, thanks for all the information/input so far.

ken ace brewer on this site has done alot with the 350 pontiac, but still i think you would be just as well off with the 400. a 455 would be even better but a 400 will do

The bigger the better. The less gear and converter you will need.

I too would opt for the year-correct approach and find a 389 OR get ahold of the 326 H.O. heads and get respectable power from what you have.
It all depends upon your intended use for the car and your preferences. Lots of options as you already know. For me - a '64 389 and Tri-Power are what I want to see under the hood. Good luck with the project!

Keep The pontiac engine. Butler performance has stroker kits if you want horsepower.
