Default 67-68 big car fuel tank sender NEEDED..............

I need a useable a/c style fuel tank sender (or rebuildable core) for my 68 GP. I'm not looking forward to traveling cross country to the POCI National Covention in Dayton OH w/o a working fuel gauge.

I bid on a NOS unit on Ebay that was sold for $395 . Someone wanted it more than me (was that you Mike P. ?).

Thanks for any info/ leads, Les

Les, have a look at this thread. Two people are recommended to do repairs on these. Joe.

Smile Thanks for the info.........

Thanks for the link: I remember that thread and I have talked to Jack Marcheski about rebuilding my original unit. I was hoping to locate a rebuildable core to send to Jack so that I could just switch sending units when I drop the tank.

Les

Oops! I missed your note about the core. I should have figured your intent.

Les,

I don't know what your storage space situation is, but I'll bet that you have the sender back in 3 days!

Finally getting around to replacing my sending unit and after some research, years 67 and 68 used a canister type, not your typical floating arm type. Contacted Jack but he only rebuilds the floating arm type. I'd like to stick with with the original type and not deviate to the floating arm. I know no-one will ever be able tell...perhaps being a pedantic here!!
Any other suggestions as to who can rebuild these canister types?

There is a '68 GP and a Bonneville in a local yard if you need a replacement.

Also I am going down to my parts cars tomorrow and pulling two sending units from '69's, will those work or is it a different style?

Slightly off topic, but how did you determine it was your sending unit and not your gage?

Mine gage fluctuates between 1/4 and empty but that does not seem to be based on the amount of fuel in the tank.

I am just starting the process of trouble shooting the cause, but I am pretty sure mine is the gage. I would be interested in the process you used to test yours.

Best Harry

Here's the problem: the donut-shaped float surrounds the central post/pickup tube (windings are around this tube) and it has the two pickup points in it's internal diameter that "read" the windings voltage. The float is positioned and buffered to the canister's inside walls by rubber bumpers that swelled up, binding the float and making it useless: in my case it read from empty to 1/4 tank even when full. I resorted to writing down the tank mileage in order to not run out of fuel @ the wrong time. It caused by today's fuels which would require sourcing some current fuel-proof material to use for this purpose. How pedantic are you .

Jack's conversion works as GM intended .

FWIW, the sending unit in my 67 GP's original tank is the floating arm type. I bought another tank because my original was dented up, and the donor tank had the canister type in it. I put my original floating arm type in the replacement tank. My car is an A/C car. Could that be the difference? A/C vs. non-A/C application?

Alan,

If I am correct the A/C and 428 cars have got a fuel return line whereas the others do not. I am wondering if those cars with the return line use the canister where the others could use the arm?

Just a thought,
Harry

Red face

i need a tank and sending unit for my 69 catalina, its an a/c 400 car. it too has a canister sending unit. the 68 bonneville i recently parted out was an a/c car also, but had a swing arm floater in it. i can not swap the two because 1 is a large hole, and the other is a small hole. the canister bolts in and the 68 has the ring. i would swap the whole assembly since its only a driver, but the 68 doesn't have a return/vent line like the 69 canister one does. what should i do? anybody reasonably close by with a 69 canister type unit and tank with a return line for sale? thanks, oren

That's who rebuilt my sending unit. They did a great job on it. I was impressed it came back so nice.

My GP is both a 428 and and A/C car, and has the fuel return line. Still not sure why it has the arm type sending unit instead of the canister type.

Both my not A/C and A/C 68 GP had the canister type sender in it. The lever type conversion is the way to go. No one will ever tell the difference unless they take it apart to see it. Pat
