Default 525 DYNO RESULTS

Well, I finally was able to get my engine to the dyno last week, so I thought I would post the results.
The engine is a Aluminum 525ci. with a Butler/Allpontiac aluminum IA2 block, 4.310 bore, 4.5 stroke forged crank w/6.8 GRP aluminum rods and ross pistons. The heads are KRE highports and a BOP intake, both ported by Dan Barton with the heads flowing 388cfm @.800 lift. The cam is a Comp Cams 4/7 swap, ,285 intake and 288 exhaust duration @ .050, 110 lobe separation and .777 lift w/1.65 rockers. Carb is a 1250 dominator.

I really wasn't too concerned with the horsepower numbers because I already knew what the car ran. I mainly wanted to just do some testing and tuning to see what it likes and what works best. Best run last year with the car was 5.33 et @ 129mph 1/8 mile w/ 1.16 60ft. The car weighs approx. 2350 lbs.

Now to the results, the best pull was 821.7hp @ 6800rpm and 719.9 ft lbs of torque @ 5500rpm. The first pull we made was with the engine just out of the car the way it was when it ran the 5.33 et. That pull was with 30 degrees total timing and netted 798hp. We bumped the timing to 33 degrees and it made 810hp. We bumped the timing up again and the hp dropped off, so we put it back to 33 degrees. We then played with the cam timing and that's when we got it to 821hp, so that's where we left it. We did a total of 12 pulls and all were revved to 7000rpm where the hp was just starting to fall off. We did do one pull to 7400rpm and the hp dropped off about 30hp from 6800 to 7400. Bottom line is we gained about 20hp from the baseline, so we will see in a few weeks when I take it to the track, what difference that will make. I might also mention, the guy that owns the shop where I dyno'd, said his dyno is a little on the conservative side and he thought it would probably make 50 or 60 hp more on some other dyno's.

I know there is more hp to be had with this engine by going with more cam, etc., but my goal for this engine from the start was not to make the max hp possible, but to have a good reliable engine I could bracket race a full season (200 passes or so) at a time without having to worry about valve springs, head gaskets, etc. So, far I think I have done that. I had about 100 passes on it last season with no issues and I plan to double that this year. I pulled it apart after the dyno session and everything still looks perfect.

Nice Numbers and light wieght, should be fun stuff. Did you try any other intakes? Or have to do any Epoxy adding in the intake?
Good luck with it,
John

What is your compression and what is the centerline on the cam?
That is pretty good power for a standard pushrod location head.

Nice numbers. I may hold off for an aluminum block over an iron IA2.
What ICL did you start with and what did you change it to when you saw the increase?

Smart move...nice reliable engine you can go rounds...low maintenance.
Really impressive numbers for a 388 cfm head.

You sound like me.Guys like yourself like to race every week and go as many rounds as possible without pulling the hood off.Sure you might pick up a tenth or so by tweaking the engine or car,but if you can go race and on any given night only move around a couple hundreths thats perfect.
My engine combo is very close to yours in terms of reliablity and power.I ran 5.74 at 2980lbs.Its a Aluminum 525 with 370cfm wideports,.756lift,1050hp carb.

5.33 is sweet and with an aluminum Pontiac engine, even better.
Good Luck this year!

Excellent Numbers there Kelvin. 200 passes would be great. Wonder if
you could make 300 at some point like Brady or if the car is too heavy vs Brady's dragster and the chebby engine?

Tell your brother I said hello, too.

No, I didn't try any other intakes and no epoxy. Thanks.

Compression is 14:1, cam centerline is 110 and is installed at 106 and that is where it made the most power. I tried it at 104 and 108 and it fell off about 10hp both of those times.

Thanks Tom, and yes I think 300 passes is definately possible, I just don't think that I could or will make that many in a season. And btw.... don't tell Brady I said this, LOL, but I question him making that many passes in a season, as well. LOL

Oh, and thanks guys for the kind words and encouragment.

I saw him run a bunch of times last year at the Pontiac Uprising in Arkansas City, KS. It's one fast Pontiac. Sounds great during the bunout.

Kelvin, do you know if the dyno corrects to standard or SAE correction factors? Most of the Stuska dynoes I have seen correct to SAE and thats why they show 50 to 60 less power.

Dan - No I don't know correction factors on his dyno, I didn't realize there was any difference in them til he told me his was conservative. I didn't think to ask him about why.

issach428 - I do have some other pictures posted here on another thread, here's the link below. Look on post #12, 13 and 14.

Kelvin, a while ago you sent me some pics of your TA, thanks for sending them. I was in Wisconsin when I talked to you last but I have since moved to Phoenix. The Pontiac Heaven race is tomorrow. Are you able to attend this race? I would really like to get a first hand look at it. One question. You said you used Glasstec for the scoop, where did you buy your front end? Was it one piece with a seperate hood or all differnet pieces glassed together? I still love that rear deck spoiler, that will be what I do on mine when I get to that point. I had an original '72 455 HO in Lucerne blue and that car or yours just brings back gooooood memories. I thank you for that. Mark L

Hi Mark,
No, I won't be at the Pontiac Heaven race, I don't have the engine back in my car yet. I'm actually doing that this weekend.

Yes, the scoop is Glasstek. The Front end I got from a place in California called Fiberglass Trends. But, I don't think they are in business anymore. The fenders and nose were one piece and the hood was separate. The quality was not very good, though. Yeah, I really like the way the rear spoiler turned out, my chassis builder fabricated it, he did a great job.

I had a 71 HO, automatic, Lucerne blue T/A, myself, when I was in high scool, back in 1979. I sold it in 1980 and bought a 70 1/2 , ram air III, 4 speed T/A, which I still have. I'm in the process of restoring it now. That is the reason I chose this particular body for my race car, I wanted to have a race car to match my street car. Of course the street car project got put on hold while I finished the race car. I hope to get back on it this summer.
