Question 1995 Caravan Airbag Clock Spring

Hi there - could anyone out there guide me through replacing a clock spring assembly on a 1995 Grand Caravan?

The airbag light is solid and a service code reader points to this as the problem, I haven't tried the horn or cruise control but I understand that these are also typical symptoms...

The retail part is $400, but I can get a much better deal through a connection, now I just need to figure out how to replace it.

Thanks in advance,
Liam

Disconnect battery, remove air bag, lower shields of column. Steering wheel puller. and the clock spring is there. Check w/ dealer should only be about $100. Note rear wipers motor on same fuse does your rear wiper work?

Thanks - I'll try the rear wiper first to eliminate fuse, is there any trick to removing the air bag itself once powered down?

I think there are 4 8mm or 10mm bolts from behind the steering wheel. Its been a long time since I did one. FYI there where 2 recalls on air bags systems #818 and #712. If you send me the last 9 of your vin I can check. Tom

I did this repair on our 96, pretty simple repair. I posted the procedure on allpar.com,

Thanks very much - that does look pretty simple.

VIN is 1SX543193, but I'm not sure if the same recalls will apply in Alberta, Canada?

Recall done in '99. While you have the covers off the column check the wiring were it snaps in the clock spring. From using the tilt wheel these wires would sometimes break from flexing.

No idea. The recall was for 96-up. I meant to get reimbursed for the $90 part but I never got around to it because it wasn't worth the fight with Chrysler. That damn van spent a lot of time at the dealer and cost me a ton of money in maintenance over it's life. And it was nearly worthless at trade-in time.

Thanks again to you both, very much appreciated!

Liam

p.s. my "new" vehicle is a 1969 Grand Prix, that's why I need to keep the "old" 1995 one running as long as I can!

:-D

Once you disconnect the battery wait at least 2 minutes before unplugging air bag.
When installing the new clock spring make sure the steering wheel is straight and do not let the center portion of the clockspring turn or you will need to perform a centering procedure (there is a sticker that keeps it centered).
List price should be $235.00. If you let me know if your van has cruise control or not I may have a new clockspring I can supply you with at a much cheaper price, I have several.

TAaddict - turns out my buddy is not able to supply one (changed job positions), so if you do have one for sale I'd sure appreciate it. Otherwise I'll have to scavenge from a pick-your-part.
