OIL PUMP SHAFT
I got a suprise the other day, I was driving my gto doing 60 mph going down the road and my lifters started making all kind of noise, looked at the oil pressure gauge BIG FAT 0. I shut it down quick. Towed it home pulled the dist and the oil pump shaft spins like a top. Tear down time, they do make a better shaft I hope.

The current issue of PONTIAC ENTHUSIAST (August 2009) features a writeup of the 462 Stroker engine that will be given away at the Carlisle All-GM Nationals. It is being built by Nitemare Performance and it shows two pictures on page 41 of their new oil pump drive shaft. I have only seen the pictures so I have no comments to make about it except that it looks like a really nice piece. Thought I'd share this for those who haven't seen the magazine.

A free spinning shaft could also be due to the check ball nut backing out and releasing the ball.

Er ah , my experience says the oilpump shaft is the "Idiot Light" for a headgasket breech.
Verify Headgasket via Compression test, and look inside each valve cover for evidence of anti-freeze film/gunk. ================================================== =========== My Main & Rod bearings were pretty good after the oil pump siezed on shaft varnish softened by anti-freeze. |

One question does come to mind, though. Is the oil pump relief valve blocked off? This can cause the shaft to shear, due to hydraulic lock or high oil pressure when the engine is started cold. High weight oil and cold weather aggravate the problem.
It might not fail when the high pressure occurs, but the damage can be done and the failure happen on down the line.
