I meant spring perch. If you look up into the round opening in the subframe where the top of the spring would sit you will see there are metal "fingers" that stick out and hold the spring in position. I didn't get the spring seated in the middle of those so the spring was off to one side and was rubbing on the side of the opening in the frame.

I need some technical assistance on my shifter. When I bought the car it had a chevy 350 with a 70 muncie (661 case) and an aftermarket Hurst shifter. I bought the correct shifter and linkage off ebay and when I bolted the shifter to the trans I used the shifter support plate from the aftermarket shifter. I set up the linkage on the bench and stabbed the whole setup as a unit. But now the shifter is too far forward in the hole. Could it be I have the wrong shifter plate?

The shifter location problem turned out to be the wrong shifter plate. I guess 1970 was a one-year-only part, another lesson learned. Thanks to "Held For Ransom" for giving me the heads up on a correct shift plate on ebay. I installed it this weekend and now the shifter sits in the floor opening correctly.

I assume you made sure it would go in reverse while you were adjusting the linkage. The center picture shows a new bolt in the recessed hole in the mounting plate. I found out the hard way that when shifting to reverse the main pin comes out of the housing and if the bolt and lock washer are to thick it will hit the head of the bolt and not go all the way to reverse or be very tight.

Yes, I know what you mean. I pulled the trans back out and swapped the plates with the trans on the bench, and could not get reverse because the pin was hitting the bolt head. I had to get a different bolt with a smaller head in order to get it to work right. I would still be under the car cussing if I had tried to figure it all out while lying on my back with the trans in the car.

I'm going to start working on the dash this week now that I got my front speaker issue resolved (a story for another day). So I pulled out the dash stuff and thought I would post some pictures of the materials I used. The original interior is code 217 deluxe sandlewood and I wanted to stay with that color. On the metal part of the dash I had the paint store mix up a pint of lacquer in PPG using the original paint codes (picture 1). I then painted a plastic card and you can see in picture 2 that it is a very good match to the original color on the steering column. Picture 3 is the metal dash after it was painted. The lip where the dash pad attaches was taped off so it is the original paint. After getting the lacquer paint I had the paint store mix up some SEM to use on the vinyl dash, console and kick panels (plastic). I didn't want to deal with mixing and having to clean a paint gun every time I painted something so I had them put the SEM into rattle cans. Picture 4 shows the vinyl dash pad sitting in place and its a very good match with the metal dash. For the medium sandlewood I ordered the rattle cans from Ames (sorry PY) since they claim they matched this to the PUI interior vinyl. Picture 5 shows all the stuff I used. The white sheet of paper is the SEM formula for the dark sandlewood. The windshield pillar trim in picture 5 was painted with the medium sandlewood paint from Ames.

A few more pictures. The dash and pillar trim are just set in place, they are not mounted yet.

I spent today painting the fender wells and all the hardware in anticipation of hanging the passenger side fender tomorrow. There is a hole in the forward door frame area near the cowl (photo) and I don't remember if there was anything in it. I tagged and bagged every bolt and shim, but I do not have anything foe those holes (one per side). Are they just left open?

Any suggestions on how to hang the fenders and fender wells? I have heard that it's easier to bolt the fender well to the fender and hang it as a unit, but I have never tired that. Opinions?

I also need to clean and paint the lower windshield plastic pieces before I hang the fenders since there is a screw under the fender. They're not perfect, but they will have to do, especially since they are impossible to find.

I installed the passenger side fender today. I bolted the fender well to the fender and slid it on as a unit. With the wheel off it slipped on easily.

I have a lot of things I should be spending money on before I buy tires, but I need to get those hideous western wheels off this car. I can't stand to look at it, I need to get the rally II's on!

Looking good, Chris. I got a chuckle out of your garage wall -- more rattle cans than the average auto parts store has on their shelves. But I'm sure many of us are in that boat..

Rick,

Thanks for the compliment. I've been following your posts and you're doing very nice work yourself. As for the color, it has really grown on me and I'm anxious to see how it looks with all the trim on. My painter is supposed to redo the color sanding and polishing in a week or so, then I can put the trim on.

Yea, I started out with one shelf, then had to buy another, and I've outgrown that one too. As soon as I finish the interior and trunk, many of the cans will go away. FYI, I bought those shelves at IKEA. They are used to site picture frames on when mounted to the walls inside a home. But, they are the perfect width for spray paint cans. They sell them in different lengths, these were $19.00 each.

Much fancier than the 2x4 shelves I use

Picture 1 - professional method of spray paint storage. You can never have to many different shades of black.
Picture 2 - See the metal cabinets on the wall at the top left of picture, there are four more i haven't gotten around to hanging yet. One of those was to be for all the paint cans.
I seem to start another projet before I finish one.
Picture 3 - Reason for not finishing first project, Putting "Old Goat" out of its misery, to rusty to save to make room for next project.
Chris the car is looking great
