In the latest chapter of "two steps forward and one step back" I had a problem with that aftermarket speaker when I tried to install the dash. The bracket was hitting the dash causing it to stick out too far, (first two pictures). I had to remove the speaker and open up the mounting hole so I could move the speaker back.

I got the carb back from a friend of mine who rebuilt it for me so now the fuel system is done. I'm using a correct 7040563 so the evap system will be functional, (as soon as I find a gas cap).

Default Dash

I have most of the dash together now but I can't find the box with the headlight switch knobs and the screws for the dash bezel. I'll need some final adjustment on the ash tray and the passenger air vent. I also need to buy a new glove box lock so I can put glove box door on. But, it's looking good.

I just read this whole thread and your work is outstanding!..and inspirational

Question on black underhood paint?

I saw that you used a glossy laquer on the firewall/cowl.
But what did you use for the fenderwells? and core support?
One of the Eastwood rattle cans that line your walls? Or did you have them sprayed?

I used the same paint on the cowl, firewall, fender wells and core support. The paint might look glossy in the pictures but it's really not. I used PPG 9266 black lacquer which is what the factory used. I don't know if it is 30 degree, 60 degree, or what, but it looks just right to me. The Eastwoods underhood black is very close but it does not have the same "sheen", it looks a little too flat to me.

Well I went to put my tach harness in and I had forgotten to drill the hole in the firewall (my car originally came with idiot lights). So, I got to practice taking off my drivers side fender so I could drill the hole. Fortunately there was a very informative thread on the subject which had pictures and an explanation of just where to drill. I should take this opportunity to thank all of you who freely share your knowledge and past experiences with others. It is the best resource for dealing with problems. I used a 1 1/8th hole saw to cut the hole. The grommet is used on two other places on the car, the blower motor wire where it comes out of the firewall (non a/c) and the passenger side core support where the forward lamp harness comes back into the engine bay for the right front corner light, so it's a pretty easy part to find.

Default Steering column

My car originally came with the plastic steering wheel and I wanted to convert it to a formula wheel so I had to paint the steering column black. I used the same PPG black lacquer I used on the firewall, core support, etc... Interesting that it appears the column was originally painted sandlewood while it was assembled.

I restored the formula wheel collar myself rather than buy one. The first time I painted the collar the texture sagged and I had to strip it off again. The second time around I read and followed the instructions on the paint can and it turned out just fine. Go figure!

Here are some pictures with column in. I have one each of the gear shift sticks so I could go console or non-console. I really like the look of the non-console with the low back seats. However, with sandlewood interior being two different colors that color interior looks good with a console. Decisions, decisions!!!

Default Steering wheel

I bought this steering wheel from a board member (455HOTA) about a year and a half ago. It's been sitting patiently in a box waiting to be used. It's not original, it's been leather wrapped, but it looks real nice and has a good feel to it. The center cap and emblem is a swap meet purchase that cost me $9.00. It was dark brown but I used SEM landau black on it and it looks new.

it's all looking great! Did you have to do anything to your woodgrain dash bezel or was it in that nice of shape to begin with? It has a nice sheen to it almost like it has a satin clear on it.

What are you doing with the old tan steering wheel? Like an idiot I threw the tan one from my grandmothers car out years ago when I swapped to a different wheel. Been looking for another one for a while, now.

I used Pledge. I had an old wood grain bezel that was in bad shape so I tried the Pledge on it first just to be sure it would not ruin the bezel. Here are some pictures of the test peice. I used the pledge on the area between the bird emblem and the small gauge pod opening to the left of the emblem. I just prayed it on a clean rag and wiped in on, it cleaned off all the dirt and gave the wood grain a nice finish.

Steve,

I had planned on keeping it, but let me think it over. If I decide to part with it I will let you know.

Chris

It's hard to believe it's been six months since I last posted, but I kind of took the winter off. Here are some pictures of a few the small stuff I did when weather permitted.

I probably should have painted the under side of the hood before painting the car, but...
