Default Headlight knob pulled for the last time?

I'm installing a new dash wiring harness and have found that the headlight knob (mounted on a tri-angular shaft) is not "snapping back into the reostat light switch. I pushed in the spring loaded switch to remoce it, but even though the shaft seats, it does not lock into place. Any ideas or fixes?

Sometimes, as they get older, the shaft won't go in without pushing the button back in, and even then you still have to find the sweet spot.
