Question Fact or Fiction: '86 2+2 w/Richard Petty Special Edition

There are two of these aeroback 2+2 GPs on ebay right now, and this guy claims his friend's is a 'RICHARD PETTY SPECIAL EDITION'. Of course, maybe he does not know any better, and it is his buddy who is full of it. At least I never heard of this so-called Petty edition on one of these.
I know they had them on some early/mid-nineties FWD Grand Prix. I think the owner copped the decals from a dealer, or a FWD owner that had an extra set. Not to mention the car has been repainted.
And the cheesy air cleaner does little to add to the owner's credibility.

I'm also thinking there was little or no celebrity marketing of this type back in 1986.

This 2+2 seems more nice, and looks more appealing, even with twice the miles. The seller needs to do more research on how many were produced though.

A third one has just popped up on eBay.

Inerestingly, it has a metric odometer. Makes me wonder if that was borrowed from another G-body. As in; some redneck thought it would be cool to 'go over 100' all the time.
It would be unusual for a Canadian issue GP to find a home in Florida, but I guess the pull from NASCAR fans could explain that.

Approximately 1225 Grand Prix 2+2's were built in 1986

IIRC, There were no special editions on the 2+2 in 86, it was a special edition in it's own right that was produced to allow the body style to compete in the Nascar series. They were sold thru the GM dealer auction after their promotional use and were all identically optioned.

There was supposed to be an 87 model run also but that was cancelled before it began. I had one on order for the 87 model yr before GM informed us that they wouldn't be built.

Some were made in Canada and optioned for use there. I own a Canadian built car, made for use in the US. Mostly the differences are emissions between the US and Canadian use cars.

Not factory, it appears a few dealers in the Charlotte area got together, paid Richard and had some graphics made.

My thoughts exactly.
I'm sure the RP signature graphic was 'cloned' from one of the FWD special edition Grand Prixes.

You mean 1990. I've seen one 91 /92 with them on it in petty blue. Ugly car imo.
