I knew a guy that had one with one of the old Buick aluminum V8's. Since that engine was the basis for the Rover V8 and TR8 engine he was able to use a TR8 bellhousing & clutch linkage. With some custom headers and motor mounts it was a snap to drop in. Stock or not, they're fun little cars.

If it's equipped with a "Luca's" electrical system you'll only be able to drive it during the day.

I bought a brand new Triumph TR4 IRS in my youth, I liked it for what it was in it's era, pretty generic but fun. At that time in my life the Shelby Cobra's had a great influance, so after a few years I considered removing the heavy 4-cylinder British tractor motor and installing a 289 Ford V-8 engine which was not only lighter but smaller. Like many cars I still wish I owned it.

Have someone push the clutch in and see if you can move the crank back & forth slightly; Triumphs are notorious for dropping crank thrusters -
And your Lucas has 3 settings: off , on and flicker.

Lucas owns the patent for short circuit.

They are cool cars except the rust and Lucas part.
Lucas invented intermittant wipers, intermittant turn signals, intermittant headlamps and intermittant ignition.
Why do the English drink warm beer? Lucas makes the refrigerators.
Since it is an inline 6, I wonder if a OHC6 Spint would go in?

Good luck with it Bjorn.

I've always like the TR6, they're neat little cars. There's a guy who posts here once in a while who actually has one with a Pontiac engine in it.

Having owned a 63 Mini Cooper., a 58 Morris Minor and a 68 GT6 vert (= spit body) I know well the "Lucas" syndrome...
Sir Lucas (gentlemen dont motor after dark) , the knight of darkness....lol

actually ,didnt have much electrical problems with them....only the Mini, and it was then under warranty

I've got a friend in Flatwood W.V. that just sold one to some out of towner, sight unseen!! It used to belong to his Dad, he had quite a few cars but he couldn't keep the TR6 going long enough to sell!!!

He's been working on it, on and off, for 4 or 5 years and finally gave up.....too much rust was found underneath, then, after the genuine "Prince of Darkness" Lucas electrics shorted and set fire to the car he finally admitted defeat, tarted it up and put it up for sale.

Seriously though Bjorn, I hope it turns out to be a ripper of a car.

Back in 74 my older brother bought aTR6 for his daily driver, and surprisingly it served him well for 4 years. It certainly had it's electrical problems but none of them caused him to get stranded. He paid $1200 for it and sold it for $3500 in 78. My dad, who worked for GM, hated the car and was floored that he got that much for it. My brother took the money he made and spent the summer in Europe. He still talks about that trip today.

The 6 cyl ran pretty strong after he tuned it up and synchronized the carbs. The car was a fun ride, you'll have a good time with it Bjorn.

Close - actually the three position switch is "Dim", "Off" and "Flicker"

The TR-6 can REALLY benefit from distributor tuning.

Do a little research on the curve in yours. Many came with two different curves (US - smog, and European - no smog). The European curve could be actuated by removing the cam retaining screw, and rotating part of the distributor. Its been 35 years since I worked on one, and memory is fuzzy; but one of the TR guys will know about it.

Jon.

Distributor tuning?
Doesn't that require a "spark". Best wishes on getting one of those reliably...........

Thanks Jon...my buddy does those very well...he`s an old Volvo/ British car mechanic/engineer...the distributor may also be replaced already? I was thinking of going to a pointless system if its not already done....

and he rebuilt my SU`s in my GT6...and tuned them 3 , 4 yrs ago... he`s quite good at those... not sure which carbs this one has yet , but SU`s were common,,, might be Webers ?? many people replaced them......
