This tab is original to one of my 70 T/A project cars. Does anyone know what it's purpose is?

your tab is just been flattened,,, normally it holds the power steering hose as a clamp of sorts....

I don't think so. Power steering hoses run farther back and it doesn't look like it's not in it's original shape. Anyone have pics of theirs -- although I've yet to see another one.

Could it be to secure the started wire harness as it ran under the ram air manifold and along the motor mount? Just a guess.

Nope. Starter wire harness runs a few inches farther back. There was nothing attached to it when I purchased the car many years ago and I can find no reference to it in the assembly manual.

Is it possible the gear came off of a 70 Camaro? I had a 70 Camaro that had the same tab mounted in the same location with a retainer that attatched to this tab to keep both power steering hoses in place. I have not ever seen one on a Firebird.

Original steering box.
Drive train is all original. Could have been shared with Camaro. |

I've looked at TONS of 70-72 Birds over the years & can't say that I've seen that part attached to any steering box.
(might have been Camero specific?) |

The mystery continues. As far as I know it is original to the car.

Someone who was restoring a 70 TA (a white/red one if I recall) asked me about a part like that at the POCI/GTOAA convention last summer.... (maybe you?).
None of the 70 birds I've ever owned (including some very original ones) had that bracket.

Wasn't me. But now we know I'm not alone on wondering about this part.

Wonder if it makes a difference that it's a Canadian car?

This is entirely possible its a camaro box on a bird from the factory. They ( sub assembly) need a box with a certain ratio and it was on the pile, they knew, as we know ,they are the same box as a camaro, so it was put on. I parted a 70 formula with one like this.

What are the date code numbers on the aluminum cover?

Code is 036 0, so Feb stamped for a March car.
A swap makes sense since Camaros and 'birds were assembled together. |

Here's another one that I've always assumed got built with a Camaro box. This is a '71 Formula with a box dated 266-0, which fits well with the 01B Trim Tag date. But this bracket looks different than the one posted to start this thread.

When we restored my friend's very original 1970 Chevelle his steering gear box had a clip on it for the power steering hose. Here is a picture of it.
