Anyone have any info on what a CTF model is. I found what I think is a good core, and there is a tag on it that says CT F on it. The guy "thinks" its out of a 87' GN with a stock converter.

Buick GN's of that vintage were "BRF" codes. (FYI, Buick GN's used higher stall 'D5' converters)
CTF sounds like a 305 Chevy (full size car) model.

Nowadays there are all kinds of goodies and billet parts available. There is even a GN knockoff valvebody. If you are going to build it right pretty much any core is suitable. If you are looking for something to drop in behind a mild street engine or cruiser, I'd look for an 86-up unit out of (1) a Turbo Buick, (2) Monte SS or 442 Olds, followed by everything else 86-up. Forget about units out of GNX's as well as the 89 TTA's because those are like Bigfoot & the Loch Ness Monster.

That core will be fine to build up. In the serial number on the tag either before or after the stamped CTF (I can't remember exactly) it will have the year. 86 and up had a hardened sun shell which you can reuse. (I think the fact that there is an F on the tag automatically makes it 86 and above. Prior to this they didn't have an F.) Otherwise, the rest, just like any other core, regardless of code, will need to be built up some. CK makes an excellent shift kit that will make that vb almost indistinguishable from a 'performance' valve body.
