rear axle interchangeability
Who knows if the dimensions of a 2nd Gen F-body rear axle are the same as a 68-72 A-body rear axle.
Right now I have a 8.2 chevy rear end on my '68 GTO, I'd like to replace this with a stronger rear end. I live outside the US so walking into a junkyard and pulling an axle isn't really an option. Now I can get my hands on a 8.5 10 bolt from a 74 Camaro for free. I know I'll need to transfer the control arm brackets from my '68 GTO axle to the '74 Camaro one if that's possible (is it?). The other thing I'd like to know is if the dimensions of the axles are the same (one wider than the other). The donor isn't around the corner so I can't (I could but it's a bit of a drive, so I figured I'd ask here first) drive to the donor and just measure it up and if I do take the rear axle I get the entire rusted heap of crap car and have to get rid of it (more hassle than I want to go through for a free rear axle if it doesn't even fit).

In order to use the '74 Camaro rear you'd have to be able to weld 2 upper suspension bushing brackets onto the top of the cast iron center section, which won't be possible.
Pass on the '74 Camaro rear. |
