CORE 1984 TH400 short tail??? Is it a good candidate for performance???
I haven't run the actual I.D. numbers to verify build date only verified it was a short tail TH400. Whats confusing is it was pulled from a 1984 fullsize Chevy van! I would have thought a fullsize chassis would have a longer tailshaft.
Is this a good candidate for a performance rebuild? They also have a short bed Dually with a TH400 with an aftermarket Overdrive installed! It looks a lot like the gear vendors unit to me.

Good luck to the new owner of the Ventura II! Sold the car after 13+ years. Look for it on the Hot Rod Power Tour in the future as it's currently being re-configured as a Pro-Touring ride! |

2 case designs: HD and regular, but several process variations on either case type that can make or degrade the case integrity. Such process variants: cold-flow on bell-housing area, alloy hardness/softness (stripped threads is one softness indocator).
Tail cup has about 3 design variants: lowest duty (no stiffener ribs), medium ( 2 stiffener ribs, High duty 4 stiffener ribs). These are o,1,2 webs per Trans mount side. That is nice but ALSO prefer to use the 1.5" (by memory) long tail bushing over the 3/4" long or 1" long bushing for best Yoke support. |
