Default Help for 6x heads

Does anyone know of a reputable shop in Virginia that can work a set of street 6x heads. Most shops don't know pontiac and want to treat them as if they are a SBC. I have already tried Mr. P and he can't due to health issues.

thanks

Tom

If you can hack the freight charges, would be great to send them to SD Performance, never heard of anyone who was not delighted with the results. Hope Mr. P gets well soon, too.

Default 6x heads

Your right about SD, they do a great job but the cost of crating and shipping will be more than I paid for the heads.

Unfortuatly I'm on a tight budget and it has taken me 4 months to rat hole away enough money to have them done. The last shop I had work done at align bored a block off center for me. Needless to say now I'm concerned about the quality of work here.

Send Dave an Email, and ask, to make sure. they probably get heavy discounts, w/ the volume of freight they have. Doesn't cost anything to ask...
He might have a set of heads to sell, then freight would only be one way...

Current cost of freight is beyond stupid. The worst part is, they were going up, BEFORE the fuel prices started going up...

tripower55,

Just a question....HOW in God's name did they align bore a block off-center? I've
align bores several thousand blocks, so I'm EXTREMELY curious how they did this.

Default 6x heads

I'm in Virginia Beach (norfolk area).

The work I need is to have the heads milled .025 and gasket surfaces trued. Valve guides installed, I need to purchase correct height SS valves that will work with Lunati 73949 valve springs and retainers and of course a good valve job. This is for a 433 that is in a very light weight street vehicle running the Lunati 60903 cam.

I don't mind a drive to see someone that knows what they are doing and paying the cost involved (MR. P). I Just hate to give away 4 months of savings to have someone to build them wrong and find out later.

I really do appreciate the responses I have here from all of you.

Thanks,

Tom

Default Off center align bore

hurryinhoosier62

To answer the off center align bore question they don't no how they did it either. But you could see where the bar barely touched the drives side of the mains and the passenger side was cut deep. When I got the block back the main bores were oval shaped. Ruined a good 71 400 block.

All they did was a refund the cost of machine work. I still fighting with them......

And this is why I'm leary about the heads.

There's a machine shop in Portsmouth that we used to use when i lived up there. gary is their head man. He's also a member here. Knows the 6x's better than most. he also goes by goatman.
All it will take is a few phone calls to narrow down your search so give it a try.

tripower55,

It sounds like they were using a Storm Vulcan/Sunnen machine. It's harder than hell to
get the bore "off center" when using a Berco or Rottler. Either that or the operator was
a REAL DUFUS. Also, they could have over-torqued the block when "tying"it down.

I know Marty personally and can send you his number if you'd like. Marty knows Pontiacs and has a good reputation. In fact he is going to be working my 670's when I get started on my new engine

I used these guys when I lived in Williamsburg, but haven't been in that area for many years. Steve may still be there. If no porting is involved, they are quite capable of milling the heads and setting them up with the right valves, spring height, etc....Cliff
