Default Woodward Avenue - through the years

The attached was in the Detroit News over the weekend: a little over a hundred photos of Woodward Avenue, starting in the 1860's up through the present.

I thought it was interesting, and helpful in imagining a Detroit that was vibrant and growing. Many of the landmarks are still here, some in use and some as industrial ruins.

"For most of its 204 years, it's been the region's prime meeting place, shopping place, cruising place and gathering place.

"Woodward Avenue is where Detroiters sent off union troops in 1861, a month after the Civil War began, and where we celebrated the end of World Wars I and II. Where we visited Hudson's and Kern's and greeted FDR and Santa Claus.

"It's where we watch our fireworks and salute our heroes.

"As Detroit celebrates its 310th anniversary next week and the suburbs ready for the Woodward Dream Cruise next month, The Detroit News offers a historic photographic tour of our main street — Woodward Avenue. "

Sounds right. We have a long and glorious tradition of trapper and lumber barons well before the revolutionary war (originally founded as "Fort Wayne").

Sure enough: founded on July 24, 1701, by the Frenchman Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. Its name originates from the French word "détroit" (pronounced: [detʁwa] for "strait", in reference to its location on the river connecting the Great Lakes.

Some nice shots that still look the same. We used to actually manufacture products in this country and Detroit was a big part of that.

Haven't seen any horses (of the four legged type) at that corner in quite a while....

Woodward angles off to the northwest so the resulting intersections are not square. I can tell by the shape of the building that it is showing either the south-west corner, or the north-east corner. I know the southwest corner is all new, but I'll have to see if that building is still standing on the northeast corner (probably not).

Do you think they were bugging each other as they sat out the light? Since it is straight they did not have to worry about dead mans curve.
