Default Ford to recall 1.1 million pickups for gas tank problem

08/01/11 - TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) -- Ford Motor Co. is recalling 1.1 million pickup trucks because the gas tanks can fall off and cause fires.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday on its website that the metal straps holding the tanks can rust, allowing them to fall, rupture and catch fire. The defect has been blamed for eight fires, three of which spread to the rest of the truck. One person was injured, suffering first- and second-degree burns, Ford spokesman Wes Sherwood said.

The recall affects certain 1997 through 2004 Ford F-150 models, as well as some 1997 through 1999 model year F-250 pickups. Also affected are Lincoln Blackwood pickups from the 2002 and 2003 model years. They were sold in cold-weather states where salt is used to clear roads. The salt corroded straps holding the tanks and they broke, NHTSA said.

Sherwood said the company will notify owners in September to bring their trucks to dealers who will replace the straps with new ones that are coated to resist corrosion. Parts to fix the problem, he said, won't be widely available until then.

People with questions should contact their dealer, who can install a cable to hold the tanks in place until the replacement straps arrive, Sherwood said.

Gee, Ford saved a few pennies by not plating those straps. Good call.

You don't?? You need to get the salt off and most automatic car washes(unless you get the most expensive wash) don't wash the undercarriage. salt eats away at everything under the car/truck.

X2!!!

God forbid if people took care of their stuff.

Granted,Ford uses some crappy metal.IE,diff covers and oil pans;we change those quite often here at the shop. But if you hosed things off,the stuff will last longer.

My truck is an `03,and the diff covers, oil pan,AND tank straps are in great shape. Why?cause it goes to the car wash after EVERY snowstorm.

Imagine that.

I just love lazy people and the way they blame everyone else.

I can understand salt up north but if it is happening all over and it is a metallurgical
issue, wouldn't "washing it off" make it worse? I personally DO wash the the undercarriage each week at the car wash just to keep it clean as i have a dirt drive (glad Scott Misus isn't around to bust me on that one)

I still have a stack of straps from the last time this happened with a different model when I was working at the Ford dealership. Can't remember which model though. Maybe the contour? Focus? I'm still trying to block it out...

At least it's not a cheap bolt head that could pierce a gas tank upon rear impact.

So now salt on the roads(put there intentionally) is now the responsibility of the manufacturer.

Following that liberal logic, why don't all the Ford owners that live in close proximity to the ocean have Ford replace things that corrode on the vehicle as a result of ocean air?

I've already had the straps off my 04 F150 to replace the fuel pump, they looked good
1 1/2 years ago. It was built in august 2004.

Isn't the tank plastic? If it's metal, how long do you have to drag the tank down the road to wear a hole in it and start a fire?

I have a 79 Trans Am that was originally sold in Denver CO. In the 70s through the 90s they used nothing but salt on the roads and my straps on the gas tank have not fallen off. Cmon trying to blame people instead of Ford is a stretch. I had a 85 Bronco and the rear had a small hole of rust and the next year the rust took over the rear wheel well. How many people have old cars with the original straps attached????

A Friend of mine let his wife drive his 64 GTO (unrestored) to college every day in Michigan. One day he tells me that he has to go and get her and tow the car back home with a tow strap after the gas tank straps rotted through and the gas tank falls on the ground shearing the rubber gas line.

Chit can happen on any vehicle in Michigan (salt) weather. I changed the frame on my 64 GTO due to salt damage and I routinely washed under the car to TRY and get the salt off the undercarriage during the time the car was in Michigan.

Yep, I totally agree that the Ford "GAS TANK STRAP GUY" should be hung up by his B*LLS for not testing the vehicle in Michigan SALT conditions over several years before he signed off on the vehicle.

I realize that none of you guys ever made a mistake. Reality is the guy was probably laid off by Ford several years ago before GM and Chrysler went bankrupt.

If you do get a "small hole of rust" and you let it go for a year in the rust belt, Yea, the whole fender will be eaten. That's a no-brainer with any brand. I just replaced the fuel pump in the Tahoe and with all the crap to take off and how tight it is in there, there's NO WAY that tank is just going to fall out even IF both straps broke at the same time. I had to jack the back up and slide the tank over the axle then drop the front down and slide it forward off the axle to get it on the ground. Maybe ford doesn't have clearance issues but the fill tube is still holding the tank up along with the vent tube, wires and fuel lines.
Like i asked before, How long do you have to drag the tank down the road to wear a hole in the tank and start a fire?

Tom

Could you please give us YOUR definition of "recent"?

It's been a few decades since Chevy built a Bel Air, Biscayne or Brookwood, and that's just the models that start with "B" in your list above. The Vega (also on your list) is more "recent" than those three....

I'd go into the "C's", but there are just too many that are decades old in that list...
