Default Built a surf guitar

My buddy and I needed a new project, so we built a surf guitar from a 60s Japanese Imperial guitar. Rustoleum green apple paint, Guitar Fetish lipstick pickups and gotoh-style tuners. Turned out really nice in the end and sounds amazing! Took about a week.

Nice surf guitars, but can he play like Dick Dale?

Actually the sound quality is close to Dick Dale, and I ventured out and bought extra heavy strings (12 - 56) to get that deep Dick sound (no pun intended). Though... I cant PLAY like dick dale... I'm still learning.

VERY cool! I just bought a pedal steel guitar and learning that. I love guitars in general!

Sweet! Making a new guitar is on my list of "want-to's". In the meantime, I got a special August present from Brown Santa delivered on Tuesday.

BC Rich ASM Standard.

Took a little bit of setup, but is now playing nice! Intonation from the factory was good except for the D string.

Must shred!

BTW, your green color is strangely enticing!

What's the scale on that thing?

Nice! That BC Rich looks brutal. Most BC Rich guitars in stock around here are the wild Warlock designs, I'll check that one out next time I'm in guitar center.

The scale is about 24.5".

It seems very appropriate that you "Ventured" out.

You get an "A" for effort but the only serious Surf guitars are early 60's Fender Jaguars , Jazzmasters, Mustangs, or Stratocasters.

Wrong! Don't forget Mosrites, Danelectros, Yamaha SGV's and a host of others. Go here for more info on surf guitars/music than you could ever possibly need > www.surfguitar101.com

A strat style or LP style is the only body style I care for. About all of the BC Rich body styles (warlock, beast, mockingbird, etc.) IMO look like crap - too radical.

I'm gonna put a tremolo stop on the floyd rose to lock it up. The hardtail models didn't come out til 2012, and I didn't want to wait til then.

On your surf guitar, how does the slant of the neck pickup affect tone? I'm assuming it might take a little bit of bass out of it, or sharpen up the bottom end.

Lived in Southern California for 35 years, been playing in authentic Surf bands for 20 years, and a 50's & 60's Rock music historian / vintage record collector - trust me, the above mentioned came long after the original Fender movement. In addition , theres no other better Amp than the Fender Bassman twin reverbs
